Prep roundup: SVCA girls win VACA crown

STUARTS DRAFT -- Shenandoah Valley Christian Academy won the Virginia Association of Christian Athletes girls basketball title on Saturday in convincing fashion.

The Patriots beat Stuart Hall 57-24 in the championship game. They defeated Westover, 51-25, in the semifinals on Friday night.

In the championship game, the Patriots outscored Stuart Hall 21-5 in the second period and didn't look back. Sam Yarnall had 20 points, six rebounds, three assists and three steals to lead SVCA. Grace Snyder had 19 points, six rebounds, two assists and five steals, and Carol Bartholomew had 10 points, and eight rebounds and three steals for the Patriots.

In the win over Westover, Hannah McGann had 14 points, three assists and seven steals to lead the Patriots. Yarnall had 12 points, seven rebounds and four steals, and Snyder had 10 points and five steals for SVCA. Alex Yarnall added seven points, 13 rebounds and four steals, and Bartholomew had eight points and 11 rebounds for the Patriots.

Roanoke Valley 71, SVCA 67, OT

STUARTS DRAFT -- Shenandoah Valley Christian Academy's Evan Hotek had a strong game, but the Patriots still came up short in an overtime loss to Roanoke Valley in the consolation game Saturday of the Virginia Association of Christian Athletes boys basketball tournament.

Hotek, who was named to the all-state team, had 23 points, nine rebounds, seven assists and four steals for SVCA.

The Patriots trailed by 12 at the half, but rallied with a strong third quarter, outscoring Roanoke Valley, 22-12. The game was tied at 62 at the end of regulation.

Tyler Fincham had 19 points, and Patrick McGrath had 14 points and five rebounds for SVCA.

The Patriots lost in the semifinals on Friday, 77-68, to Westover. Shyheim Gilkerson led the way for the Patriots with 21 points and six assists. Aaron Sutton and Hotek each had 12 points for the Patriots.
