Bryce Resort extends season

By Tommy Keeler Jr.

The latest round of snows may have made closed schools earlier this week and made travel conditions poor throughout the region, but Bryce Resort certainly isn't complaining.

Due to the snow on Sunday night and Monday, the resort, located in Basye in Shenandoah County, has decided to keep its slopes open for another week.

Bryce Resort General Manager Rob Schwartz said the decision was made on Wednesday to extend the season by another week, meaning the last day will be March 29. It was originally supposed to close this Saturday.

"This is as long as we've ever gone," Schwartz said. "Last year was the same, so the last two years is the longest we've kept it open."

Schwartz said this year was one of the best years the resort has had for skiing.

They opened the slopes over Thanksgiving, which Schwartz said was the earliest in 44 years.

"It's just been very consistent throughout the season," Schwartz said. "From the beginning of the season all the way to the end it's just been phenomenal."

Schwartz said that they offering a special rate on March 29 to celebrate the last day -- they will have $20 lift tickets. They normally run anywhere from $23-$62.

While the snow has been great for skiing there has been one drawback for the resort -- the golf course is snow covered.

"It does hurt the golf," Schwartz said. "A week like last Saturday we had some people who were skiing in the morning and then played golf in the afternoon."

Overall, the resort has had a strong winter season. Schwartz said it couldn't have gone much better than it did.

"It's been nothing short of phenomenal," Schwartz said. "It seemed like every time we needed snow it would happen. If it would snow on a Tuesday, the roads would be clear by the weekend and then they would be out skiing.

"It's just been a great season."
