STEPHENS CITY-- Reid Entsminger has achieved a lot over the last year, and now the Sherando senior can add something else to his accomplishments. Entsminger was named the Virginia Group 4A Male Athlete of the Year on Thursday.
"It's a great honor," Entsminger said Thursday night. "My teacher gave it to me and said I was a great participant for it. I did it and got an e-mail the other day saying I was Athlete of the Year and a scholarship. I was honored to get it."
Entsminger is one of 19 students in Virginia selected to receive a 2014 Allstate Foundation/Virginia High School League Achievement Award, which includes a $1,500 scholarship.
The award winners are selected by a committee of athletic directors, media representatives and VHSL staff.
There will be a luncheon held on May 12 at the Omni Charlottesville Hotel for the award winners. They will each receive a Queen Anne Revere bowl, and a smaller Revere bowl will be presented to each school so that it can be placed on permanent display.
More than 200 students were nominated for the awards according to VHSL Communications Director Mike McCall.
"Reid is an outstanding student-athlete who has left his mark on Sherando High School," Sherando High School Coordinator of Student Activities Jason Barbe said in a press release. "He is just the second Sherando student in the 21 year history of the school to receive an Allstate Foundation/VHSL Achievement Award. Our school administration as well as Reid's coaches and teachers are very proud of his accomplishments."
Entsminger is the first athlete to receive the award in Sherando history.
"That's a big honor especially since the school's been around for such a long time," Entsminger said. "To be the first person and just set expectations for Sherando, I guess. I'm glad I could be an example for the school and for future athletes."
Entsminger helped lead the Warriors to the Group AA state championship in baseball last spring. He was a pitcher and an outfielder, and one of the team's top hitters as a junior.
This past fall, Entsminger led the Warriors to the Class 4A state final, where they lost to Dinwiddie. Entsminger was a quarterback and a defensive back for Sherando. He has signed to play football in college at Lamar University.
"The past year with football and baseball two state championship [games] and one ring -- it's been great," Entsminger said. "It's been a great trip. [This] baseball season is not going like last year's, but it's still fun and I'm just trying to enjoy it, and enjoying my last few months here as a Sherando Warrior.
"I'm trying to make the most of it, because the last few years here have been amazing and it's been fun."
