On Campus: Duy having strong freshman season

Griffin Duy (R-MA ’13) is having a solid freshman season for U.Va.-Wise this year.

Duy has started four games and made 10 appearances for the Cavaliers. He has a 1-2 record and 3.82 ERA, which is fourth best on the team.

Duy has thrown 33 innings, striking out 16 for the Cavaliers.

On Friday, Duy had his best outing of the season. Duy threw a complete game five-hitter as U.Va.-Wise beat Glenville State 7-1 in the second game of a doubleheader. He walked only one batter, and the Glenville State run was unearned.

The Cavaliers are 14-23 on the season, including 11-17 in the Mountain East Conference. They have with a three-game winning streak, and play again on Saturday, hosting Wheeling Jesuit in a doubleheader.

Brandon Fletcher (Sherando ’11) is also on the squad.

STRONG START: Dylan Shirley (Stonewall Jackson ’11) continues to shine at Kent State University.

The sophomore started his outdoor season by finishing third in the long jump in the Northeast Ohio Invitational held on April 4-5 in Akron, Ohio. Shirley had a jump of 22 feet, 5 inches. He followed that up with a 16th place finish in the long jump in the Tennessee Relays with a leap of 21-6 on April 10-12 in Knoxville, Tenn.

On April 18-19, Shirley placed 12th in the long jump in the Jesse Owens Track Classic in Columbus, Ohio. He had a jump of 21-9.

Shirley had a strong finish to his indoor season for the Golden Flash. He placed fifth in the indoor Mid-American Conference championships in February.

CONFERENCE STANDOUT: Thomas Madden (Skyline ’13) competed in his first ACC Outdoor track and field championships for the University of Virginia this past weekend. The freshman placed 12th in the 10,000-meter run.

Madden ran the event in 29:54.91. He was second for the Cavaliers behind fellow freshman Zach Herriott, who placed 10th.

The Cavaliers placed eighth as a team with 53 points in the men’s championships.
Madden has had a solid outdoor track season. He finished seventh in the 5,000-meter run in a home tri-meet with California and Michigan on April 5.

Madden was also selected as the ACC Cross Country Male Freshman of the Year in cross country season.
