WINCHESTER -- Skyline survived a mistake-filled contest with host Handley in Northwestern District baseball action on Thursday, as the Hawks earned a 24-14 win in their district opener.
The Hawks (3-0) managed 20 hits and scored 17 combined runs in the sixth and seventh innings, but Skyline also committed nine errors in the win. Handley tallied 11 hits and five errors.
Sophomore Marcus Burke (2-for-4, three walks) scored six times for Skyline, while senior Sterling Jennings led the team with three RBIs. Jacob Sims, Hunter Partlowe and Tyler Johnson each added two RBIs apiece for the Hawks.
Ritenour (1-0) got the win for Skyline, as he tossed 4 1/3 innings of relief.
WINCHESTER -- Millbrook's Ryan Hartigan delivered a bases-loaded RBI single to plate the winning run in the seventh inning of Thursday's Northwestern District baseball matchup against Sherando.
Hartigan foiled a solid comeback by the Warriors, who rallied for four runs in the top of the seventh to tie the game at 6-all.
An error in the seventh, Sherando's fourth of the game, helped fuel the rally.
"Four errors -- tonight we were right on our average," Warriors coach Pepper Martin said.
Chase Smallwood pitched a complete game in the loss for Sherando (1-3, 0-2 Northwestern). Smallwood allowed seven runs (three earned) on nine hits and two walks while striking out two. Anthony Simonelli picked up the win in relief for the Pioneers.
Reid Entsminger (2-for-4, two RBIs), Hayden Fox (2-for-4, one RBI) and Zach Henke (2-for-4) led the Warriors, who also got a double from Jordan Clark.
Hartigan was 3-for-4 with a double and Jacob Jaye was 2-for-3 for Millbrook (3-1, 2-0 Northwestern).
SVCA 2, Broadfording Christian (Md.) 1
STEPHENS CITY -- The Patriots scored two runs in the bottom of the seventh to pull out a non-conference win over Broadfording Christian on Thursday.
Trailing 1-0 in the bottom of the seventh, the Patriots loaded the bases. Lucas Pufnock was on third and went a little too far down the baseline and got in a rundown. During the rundown a throwing error went into the outfield to score Pufnock and Tristan Baker with the winning runs.
Baker went 3-for-4 for the Patriots, and Pufnock went 2-for-3. Patrick McGrath had seven strikeouts in five innings of work on the mound for the Patriots (2-2).
