SU roundup: Hornets slip past Catholic in baseball

Daily Staff Reports - sports@nvdaily.com

WASHINGTON, D.C. - No. 17/24 Shenandoah University earned its 20th victory of the 2014 baseball season with a 3-2 non-league win at Catholic Thursday afternoon.

Sophomore Michael Scimanico (1-0) tossed a complete game for SU (20-5) in the win over Catholic (11-10).

Scimanico, in just his second-ever start, scattered six hits while striking out seven in earning his first victory of the season.

After allowing single runs in the second and third, Scimanico settled in and retired the Cardinals in order in the fourth, fifth, eighth and ninth innings.

Scimanico faced the minimum over the final three frames.

Shenandoah scored the game-winning run in the ninth as catcher Joe Bittner led off with a single to center, was sacrificed to second and came home on a Billy Arens double to right.

Arens drove in Bittner with the squad's second run of the game as well with a seventh inning single.

Arens had three of the Hornets eight hits on the day.

Junior Michael Paul saw his 26-game hitting streak snapped after going 0 for 4.

Shenandoah hosts Emory and Henry on Saturday in a noon doubleheader.

NORTH MANCHESTER, Ind. - Junior Michael Paul has been named as an honorable mention selection as the national Player of the Week in selections announced Thursday afternoon by the NCBWA.

Paul, who has been named ODAC Player of the Week for three straight weeks, batted .556 last week with 10 hits in 18 at-bats as SU defeated Dickinson, Franklin & Marshall and Virginia Wesleyan.

He had three home runs and drove in 15 runs in those three contests.

Paul has now hit in 26 consecutive games dating back to the start of the 2013 ODAC Tournament.

Shenandoah is back in action later this afternoon at Catholic in a 3:30 p.m. non-league contest.
