WINCHESTER – Shenandoah University saw its 2014 softball season end Monday afternoon after dropping a pair of games to the No. 11 Virginia Wesleyan Marlins.

The Hornets finished one-half game behind Bridgewater for the eighth spot in the tourney.

Virginia Wesleyan took early control in both games, scoring two runs in each of the first two innings of the opener and a total of three runs in the first three innings of game two.

Mackenzie Creech (13-0) held the Hornets without a hit for the first three innings before senior Heather Sink led off the fourth with a single through the left side.

Coach Marlena Kotynski’s club scored its two runs in the sixth by combining a Morgan Coble and Erica Kondzielawa around a three-base error in left field by the Marlins.

Kondzielawa drove in the second run with single to right while Coble scored on the error.

Creech gave up three hits and two walks in 5.0 innings before turning it over to Mary Shipp and Kristina Karagorgis for the sixth and seventh, respectively.

Karagorgis earned the save with a scoreless ninth.

Coble had two of the hosts five hits.

In game two, the defending ODAC champions scored one run in the first, two in the third and two more in the fifth off of starter Lisa Mitro (3-5) to help complete the sweep.
