SU roundup: Hornets swept in softball

WINCHESTER – Shenandoah University saw its 2014 softball season end Monday afternoon after dropping a pair of games to the No. 11 Virginia Wesleyan Marlins.
Shenandoah (10-23, 8-12 ODAC) needed one win over VWC (33-5, 18-2) in order to qualify for the eight-team ODAC Tournament.
With a 5-2 victory in game one and a 5-0 triumph in the nightcap, the Marlins eliminated SU from tournament contention.
The Hornets finished one-half game behind Bridgewater for the eighth spot in the tourney.
Virginia Wesleyan took early control in both games, scoring two runs in each of the first two innings of the opener and a total of three runs in the first three innings of game two.
All-American Tori Higgbotham led of the VWC first off of a SU starter Megan Tripp (5-11) and hit her sixth home run of the season to put the visitors on the board.
Mackenzie Creech (13-0) held the Hornets without a hit for the first three innings before senior Heather Sink led off the fourth with a single through the left side.
Coach Marlena Kotynski’s club scored its two runs in the sixth by combining a Morgan Coble and Erica Kondzielawa around a three-base error in left field by the Marlins.
Kondzielawa drove in the second run with single to right while Coble scored on the error.
Creech gave up three hits and two walks in 5.0 innings before turning it over to Mary Shipp and Kristina Karagorgis for the sixth and seventh, respectively.
Karagorgis earned the save with a scoreless ninth.
Coble had two of the hosts five hits.
In game two, the defending ODAC champions scored one run in the first, two in the third and two more in the fifth off of starter Lisa Mitro (3-5) to help complete the sweep.
Mitro allowed the five runs on four hits and seven walks in 4.0 innings of work.
Karagiorgis (18-4) allowed four hits in the shutout, a Coble double in the first and Brittany Guepe singles in the third and sixth and a Sink single to right in the sixth, and struck out eight.
The 2015 schedule will be announced this summer.
