SU roundup: Hornets top Hollins in women’s tennis

ROANOKE — The Shenandoah University women’s tennis team completed its regular season Thursday afternoon with a 7-2 ODAC victory over Hollins University.

Shenandoah (11-5, 6-5 ODAC) secures sixth place in the ODAC with the win over HU (0-13, 0-11).

The Hornets now move on to the upcoming ODAC Tournament, where SU will take on the tournament’s No. 3 seed in Saturday’s opening round.

Official pairings for the tournament should be announced this evening.

Coach Larry Hubbard’s club earned Thursday’s win by sweeping the doubles and then winning the middle four singles matches over Hollins.

Junior Shannon Allin, with a 6-0, 6-1 win at No. 2 singles, clinched the victory for Shenandoah.

Amber Lake and Caitlin Tilton, along with Allin, were double winners for the Hornets.

Lake combined with Rachel Gross to win 8-0 at No. 2 doubles before winning 6-1, 6-1 at No. 3 singles.

Tilton won 6-2, 6-2 at No. 5 singles after winning 8-2 at No. 3 doubles. She partnered with Cierra Neidermeyer in doubles.

Allin combined with Molly Barb to earn an 8-6 victory at No. 1 doubles.

Men’s tennis

BUENA VISTA – The Shenandoah University men’s tennis team completed its 2014 spring season Thursday with an 8-1 non-league loss to Southern Virginia.

SVU (11-8) won all but at No. 1 singles to take the match against Shenandoah (3-11).

Sophomore Steven Baker won that match for SU, winning 6-3, 7-5 over Pradeep Ravisankar in the top singles match.

The remaining three singles and two doubles matches went to the Knights in straight sets.

The doubles matches were very close with Southern Virginia winning 9-7 at No. 1 and 8-6 at No. 2.

The Hornets will announce their 2014-15 schedule in June.
