HARRISONBURG - James Madison softball senior shortstop Caitlin Sandy added to her collection of honors Wednesday as she picked up her third Eastern College Athletic Conference South Region co-Player of the Week, the organization announced. This is the fifth time this season the ECAC has honored a JMU player this season.
Sandy, the 2014 Colonial Athletic Association Player of the Year, went 5-for-9 with two doubles, three RBIS and two runs scored to lead the Dukes to their second CAA Tournament Championship. She is the first CAA Player of the Year to also win CAA Tournament Most Outstanding Player since 2006. Over the three games, Sandy played perfect defense for Madison with six putouts and six assists against no errors.
Heading into the NCAA tournament, Sandy is hitting a team-best .337 with eight doubles, one triple and a career-high seven home runs. She is second on the team with 31 RBIs and scored 30 throughout the campaign. The shortstop from Fayetteville, N.C., posted a .946 fielding percentage and walked 16 times to go with six stolen bases.
Sandy shared the honor with Delaware State's Nicole Gazzola while Delaware State's Vanessa Cioccato claimed Pitcher of the Week.
JMU takes on DePaul in the opening game of the Lexington Regional at 5 p.m. on Friday. The double-elimination bracket includes regional-host Kentucky as well as MAC champion Ohio. The regional championship game is schedule for 1 p.m. on Friday, May 18.
