By Tommy Keeler Jr.

Two locals have had success for Radford University’s track team lately.

Katy Harriman (Warren County ’13) placed second in the high jump with a leap of 1.58 meters in the Highlander Invitational on April 25-26 at Radford.

Ryan Farnan (Millbrook ’11) helped lead the 4×400 relay team to a fourth-place finish in a time of 3:32.94 in the Highlander Invitational. Millbrook grad and former Radford standout Joel Hanlon also competed in the relay as part of the 4×400 alumni elite team, which placed seventh in a time of 3:51.15.

Farnan also finished 12th in the 5,000-meter race with a time of 15:30.23 in the Virginia Challenge on May 9-10 at the University of Virginia. Thomas Madden (Skyline ’13) placed second in the 10,000-meter run in the same meet for Virginia. Madden had a time of 30:21.07.

Farnan finished sixth in the 3,000-meter steeplechase with a time of 9:28.69 in the Big South Championships in Rock Hill, S.C. Harriman also participated in the high jump in the Big South Championships, but did not place.

READY TO GO: Kent State University’s Dylan Shirley (Stonewall Jackson ’12) should be ready for the Mid-American Conference track and field championships in Athens, Ohio. The meet is being held today through Saturday.

Shirley had some success recently at the same venue. Shirley placed second in the long jump on May 2 in the Ohio Open at Ohio University in Athens. Shirley had a leap of 22-10.75 to finish second.

Earlier this season, Shirley finished 16th in the long jump with a leap of 21-06 in the Tennessee Relays on April 12 in Knoxville, Tenn.

The Rams are the second seed in the six-team Atlantic region and will play fifth-seeded Winston-Salem State at noon. Millersville (Pa.) is the top seed.

Jacob Carney (Sherando ’13) is hitting .370 (50-for-135) with seven doubles, two triples and one home run. Carney has 37 RBIs, which is third on the team, and has scored 29 runs.
