SU roundup: Paul named South Region Player of the Year

MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. — Junior Michael Paul has been named South Region Player of the Year in selections announced Monday morning by D3baseball.com.

Paul, the 2014 ODAC Player of the Year, is one of three Hornets to earn All-Region honors. Sophomore pitcher Darrell Thompson was named to the second team and his classmate, shortstop Billy Arens, garnered third team accolades.

Paul led SU to a 33-11 season with a .444 batting average, 21 doubles, nine home runs and 62 RBI in 178 at-bats.

Paul has previously been named first team All-ODAC, ODAC All-Tournament and to the Demorest Regional All-Tournament team.

His .444 batting average is the second best season in school history and his 79 hits, along with the 62 RBI, are fourth best in school history.

Thompson, the Hornets top pitcher, finished his season 10-2 with 75 strikeouts in 86 1/3 innings pitched.

He previously was named ODAC Pitcher of the Year and first team All-ODAC.

Arens, a first team All-ODAC honoree as well, rounds out the selections.

He hit .404 with five doubles, one triple and 32 RBI.

South Region All-Tournament Team

DEMOREST, Ga. — Shenandoah University had three baseball players earn All-Tournament honors at the NCAA Division III Tournament South Regional in selections announced early Monday morning.

Seniors Dan Powers and Vince Claudio were named at infield and pitcher, respectively, with junior Michael Paul joining them as an infield selection.

Claudio threw an 11-inning complete game in a 5-4 victory over Birmingham-Southern on Friday, striking out 10 and allowing just four hits.

Powers hit a team-best .500 on the week with nine hits in 18 at-bats and also scored five runs.

Paul hit .444 with eight hits in 18 at-bats, drove in a team-best four runs and hit the only home run of the tournament.
