Shenandoah Valley Christian Academy athletic director Ron Combs knew that his time at SVCA was coming to an end, and he was looking for a new place to continue his work. Then the perfect job opened up for him.
Combs has resigned as SVCA athletic director, and taken the same position at Legacy Christian Academy, a new school opening this fall in Stephens City.
"I'm real excited to be working in a new program," Combs said in a phone interview Friday night. "It will be fun, starting a new program. It will be like the old days."
Combs said he will also be the elementary school principal at Legacy, which just like SVCA will be for kindergarten through 12th grades.
Combs was at SVCA for 37 years, and coached many different sports. He said there were some changes made at the school that he didn't agree with and so he knew it was time to leave.
Combs coached teams to eight basketball championships in the National Association of Christian Athletes. He also coached two soccer teams to NACA titles.
Combs, a Shepherd University graduate, coached boys basketball teams to NACA titles in 1983, '86, '89, '92, '93, '95, '96, 2001 and 2010. He also coached soccer teams to national titles in 1994 and 1995.
As the athletic director, Combs guided the school to a combined 18 national championships in boys basketball, boys and girls soccer and volleyball. The school also had nine national runner-up teams.
SVCA is the winningest program in NACA history.
Combs said that he has enjoyed his time at SVCA.
"I've made a lot of great memories here," Combs said. "A lot of good stuff. It's been a lot of fun. There's been a lot of great kids that I've been able to mentor."
The Patriots have had 62 Christian High School All-Americans.
Combs said that he believes that in every person's life God uses five things to help you grow, one of them being pivotal circumstances, and that God has used pivotal circumstances to move he and his wife, Kay, to Legacy Christian Academy.
Combs said that the school already has 100 students signed up to attend.
Combs is the associate pastor, elementary principal, teacher and guidance counselor at SVCA. He started working at SVCA in 1977.
Legacy Academy will be led by Bob Quinn and the school will be working with What's New Worship, a non denominational church led by Ron Combs' son, Andy.
Ron Combs said Legacy Christian Academy is where he's meant to be.
"I was looking for a new job and this one opened up for me," Ron Combs said. "The Lord opened a new door for me."
