Prep roundup: Generals fall short in district regular-season standings

LURAY — Stonewall Jackson High School’s golf team came up short in its bid to defend the Shenandoah District regular-season title on Thursday.

The Generals, missing a regular from their lineup, finished tied with Riverheads for third with a combined 345 at Luray Caverns Country Club. Host Page County won the team event with a 338, followed by East Rockingham at 341.

East Rockingham locked up the district regular-season title with Thursday’s finish. Stonewall was second in the final regular-season standings (scored over five district mini-tournaments), followed by Page County, Riverheads and Buffalo Gap.

Wes Snyder of Riverheads was the low medalist on Thursday, firing a 1-under-par 70.

Scoring for the Generals were Kory Somers (82), Jonathan Koontz (83), Ben Rosenberger (88) and Lucas Fultz (92).

The All-Shenandoah District golf team was announced following Thursday’s tournament. East Rockingham’s Jacob Laughlin won Player of the Year honors. Koontz was the lone Stonewall golfer to land on the six-member all-district team. Other all-district selections (based on scoring in the five district mini-tournaments) were Riverheads’ Snyder, Buffalo Gap’s Campbell Thompson, Page County’s Ryan Painter and Gap’s Paden Gee.

Bryan Gunter Invitational

WINCHESTER — Sherando’s golf team grabbed a one-stroke lead at the end of Day 1 of the Bryan Gunter Invitational at Rock Harbor Golf Course.

The Warriors fired a combined 321 to take one-stroke lead over Dominion (322). Loudoun Valley (328) was third after Thursday’s opening round of the two-day tournament, which shifts to Winchester Country Club on Friday morning.

Sherando’s Brett Loy fired a 1-over-par 73 to take second on Thursday, three strokes behind leader Brandon Weaver of Loudoun Valley.

Other scorers for the Warriors were Mason Scott (80), Josh Hogue (80) and Jonah Pearson (88).

Skyline was 12th after Thursday’s opening round with a combined 410. Scorers for the Hawks were Anthony Crescienzi (93), Matt Fritts (100), Brandon Griffith (104) and Vinni Cassiano (113).
