NEW ORLEANS — Following the first few weekends of competition, the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association released its week one regional poll Monday, ranking the James Madison cross country team at No. 13 in the Southeast region.
The Dukes fell two spots from their No. 11 ranking in the preseason poll that was released on Aug. 25.
JMU is fresh off its final home event of the 2014 regular season as it hosted the JMU Invitational last Saturday at New Market Battlefield, finishing second out of six teams.
Junior Kathleen Stewart led Madison with a seventh-place finish after she completed the 5,200-meter course in 18:36.40, which ranks as the 10th-fastest time in the event’s history. Rounding out the top 10 in the race was senior Tiel Westbrook, who finished with a time of 19:00.10.
JMU is one of four Colonial Athletic Association schools to receive week one regional rankings, joining William & Mary (4th, Southeast), Elon (11th, Southeast) and Delaware (12th, Mid-Atlantic).
The Dukes return to action Sept. 19 when they travel to Farmville to compete at the Longwood Invitational.
