NOKESVILLE — Visiting Sherando High School scored three fourth-quarter touchdowns to rally past Kettle Run for a 24-7 non-district football victory on Friday night.

The Warriors trailed 7-3 heading into the fourth quarter before Sherando quarterback Patrick Minteer and Adam Whitacre combined for a 28-yard touchdown strike to put their team up for good with 9:40 to play.

Sherando’s LeeQuan Johnson Jr. (24 rushes, 141 yards) padded that lead with touchdown runs of 1 and 12 yards in the final quarter.

Sherando (3-1) took the lead in the first quarter on a 22-yard field goal by Rhett Morris, but Kettle Run responded in the second quarter with a 30-yard touchdown pass from Denzell Champion to Quay Payton with 9:56 left in the half.

Champion passed for 191 yards in the game, but the Cougars were held to negative rushing yardage (-16) as Sherando sacked Champion five times in the game.

Covenant 35, MMA 8

WOODSTOCK — Host Massanutten Military Academy grabbed the early momentum, but couldn’t sustain it in a 35-8 loss to Covenant on Friday.

MMA’s Joshua Holt took the opening kickoff 75 yards for a touchdown, and the Colonels were up 8-0 after Deontae Spence’s successful conversion toss John Love.

Covenant still just led 15-8 late in the second quarter before scoring another touchdown with no time left on the clock just before halftime.

“The kids played hard,” said MMA coach Chris Gilliland, whose team remains winless. “We had a chance. We tried an onside kick after Holt’s touchdown but we didn’t get it. We kept it close into the second half.”
