SU roundup: Hornets take 6th in state golf tournament

LAUREL FORK — The Shenandoah University men’s golf team shot a collective 320 Monday afternoon to finish sixth at the 2014 Virginia State Intercollegiate.
Playing at the par 72, 6,878-yard Olde Mill Resort, the Hornets combined Monday’s 320 with Sunday’s 316 for a 636 total.
SU finished 12 strokes back of fifth place Bridgewater.
Hampden-Sydney, which was tied with Shenandoah after the first round, shot a sizzling 303 Monday to win the tournament by two shots over Averett.
Sophomore Evan Cocke and junior Doc Schulte led SU by tying for 15th with a pair of 158s.
Cocke shot 81 Monday and Schulte a second straight 79.
Seth Crean and Brennan Lloyd both had a 163 total, with Lloyd shooting a team-low-round 76 Monday, to finish tied for 29th.
Brett Dubin had an 84 Monday that did not count toward the team total.
The squad is now off until Oct. 13-14 at the Ted Keller Memorial hosted by Randolph-Macon.
