SU roundup: Roanoke drops Hornets in ODAC men’s soccer opener

SALEM — The Shenandoah University men’s soccer team opened up its Old Dominion Athletic Conference slate Wednesday evening with a 4-1 loss at Roanoke.

Roanoke (4-0-1, 1-0 ODAC) scored the first three goals of the game to take a commanding lead over SU (2-3, 0-1).

Shenandoah got itself on the board on an Eduardo Santiago to Brian Maye goal in the 56th minute, but Roanoke answered back 20 minutes later to provide the final margin.

Santiago set Maye up for the goal off of a corner kick.

The Maroons outshot SU 18-6, including 8-4 on goal.

Roanoke took 11 of the game’s 17 corners.

Hornets keeper Matthew Poell had four saves.

The SU men host PSU-Altoona on Saturday at 1 p.m. in a non-league contest.

Women’s soccer

CARLISLE, Pa. – Shenandoah saw host Dickinson rally for a 2-1 overtime women’s soccer victory Wednesday evening.

Shenandoah (0-4-1) took the early lead on an Elizabeth Bellido to Catherine Major goal in the 39th minute, but the Red Devils had an answer.

Dickinson (5-0) tied the game in the 83rd minute before netting the golden goal 5:32 into the first sudden victory period.

Wednesday’s game was the second straight overtime contest for the Hornets.

Sophomore goalkeeper Erin Septer had 10 saves as Dickinson peppered her with 22 shots.

Dickinson also took three of four corners awarded in the contest.

SU opens ODAC play on Saturday at Randolph College.
