SU roundup: Volleyball wins twice in tournament

ALLENTOWN, Pa. – The Shenandoah University women’s volleyball team opened up play at the Buttermaker Tournament hosted by Muhlenberg with a pair of wins Friday evening.

The Hornets (6-0) won both matches by 3-1 scores, opening with a victory over Elizabethtown (2-4) and closing with a win over DeSales (4-2).

The two victories vault SU into Saturday’s championship round, where Jaime Terenzi’s club will face Allegheny in addition to host Muhlenberg.

The Allegheny match is set for noon while the Hornets face Muhlenberg at 2 p.m.

Senior Rachel Gross paced Shenandoah with 20 kills, with Blake Parkes and Allie Pieper adding 10 each.

Rachel Cerretani fueled the attack with 41 assists.

Shenandoah had 97 digs in the win with Brandi Griffith heading up a five-woman group in double figures with 27.

Elizabeth Lamont backed her up with 21.

In Shenandoah’s first match against Elizabethtown, the two teams split the first two sets with SU winning at 22 in the first before EC came back to win 25-23 in the second. The Hornets won at 10 and 19 in the third and fourth to clinch the win.

Against DeSales, the Hornets jumped out to a 2-0 lead thanks to wins at 21 and 20 in the first two sets, and after the Bulldogs won 25-23 in the third, SU closed it out with a 25-19 victory in the fourth.

Pieper had a team-high 16 kills with Elizabeth Lamont adding 15 and Gross 10.

Lamont also had 15 digs.
