Prep roundup: Wildcats pick up first win of season

MANASSAS PARK — Warren County High School picked up its first football win of the season on Friday night with a 23-7 road victory over Bull Run District rival Manassas Park.

Randall Harris got the scoring started for the Wildcats in the second quarter with a 4-yard touchdown run.

Warren County (1-5, 1-2 Bull Run) struck again in the third quarter when quarterback Robert Rutherford connected with Eric Baker on a 23-yard touchdown pass.

The Wildcats added to their lead in the fourth quarter, first with a 17-yard touchdown run by Will Spencer and then with a 21-yard field goal by Stuart Ashley.

That was plenty of scoring for Warren County’s defense, which got standout contributions from Connor McMackin, Zach Moon and Blake Cockrill.

Strasburg 30, George Mason 25
FALLS CHURCH — Strasburg used a balanced attack to knock off the Mustangs in Bull Run District action on Friday night.

Strasburg senior quarterback Mark Smoot threw for 231 yards and three touchdown passes to lead the Rams’ offense. Strasburg senior Colten Funk added 190 yards on 28 carries and a touchdown on the ground.

The Rams scored in the first quarter on a 5-yard pass from Mark Smoot to Ryan Smoot for an 8-0 edge. It was 8-3 at the half.

Strasburg extended the lead to 16-3 on a 20-yard pass from Mark Smoot to Trevin Howard. The Mustangs cut the lead to 16-10 on a fumble return in the third quarter.

The two teams traded scores in the fourth quarter. Funk ran for a 26-yard touchdown to give the Rams a 24-10 lead, but the Mustangs responded with a touchdown of their own. A 69-yard pass from Mark Smoot to Howard completed Strasburg’s scoring and put them up 30-17.

Howard finished with four receptions for 148 yards and two scores. Strasburg’s defense held the Mustangs to 151 yards rushing on 41 carries, and only 60 yards through the air.
