JMU roundup: Curry named co-CAA men’s basketball player of week

RICHMOND — Junior guard Ron Curry of the James Madison University men’s basketball team has been named the Colonial Athletic Association Co-Player of the Week, the league office announced Monday afternoon.

Curry averaged 23 points, five rebounds and 2.5 steals last week, leading the Dukes to a split in a pair of difficult CAA road contests.

The junior started the road trip by tallying a then-season-high 21 points on 8-for-12 shooting, including a perfect 5-for-5 from 3-point range, and grabbing four rebounds in JMU’s loss at Northeastern. He followed that standout performance with a career-high 25-point performance, to go with six rebounds, to lead the Dukes back from a 12-point halftime deficit en route to a 69-63 win at Hofstra.

For the week, Curry shot 56 percent (14-for-25) from the floor, including 8-for-11 from the 3-point line. The two performances marked the first back-to-back 20-point games of his career and he has now scored in double figures in seven straight contests.

This marks the second CAA weekly award of Curry’s career and the first Player of the Week nod for a JMU player this season, with the last time coming back on Dec. 23, 2013, when Curry again collected the honor.

Drexel’s Damion Lee shared the award with Curry, as the junior guard averaged 24 points, six rebounds and three assists and sank the game-winning 3-pointer as the Dragons downed College of Charleston after falling at Hofstra earlier in the week.

JMU will kick off a three-game homestand this week as it welcomes Delaware on Wednesday for a 7 p.m. contest before William and Mary comes to town for a 4 p.m. bout on Saturday.
