SU roundup: Hornets top ODAC preseason baseball poll

FOREST — The No. 17/20 Shenandoah University baseball team is the preseason selection to win it all in the Old Dominion Athletic Conference in poll results released Thursday afternoon by the conference office.

The Hornets, coming off of a 33-11 season that saw the squad earn the No. 1 seed at both the ODAC Tournament and the NCAA Division III Demorest Regional, received nine first-place votes and 98 points to earn the No. 1 spot in the preseason poll.

The 98 points is 13 clear of No. 2 Randolph-Macon and 16 better than 2014 champion Bridgewater.

SU finished atop the 2014 ODAC regular-season standings with a 17-3 league mark before falling to the Eagles in the ODAC tournament championship.

Hampden-Sydney and Lynchburg tied for fourth with Roanoke, Washington and Lee and Virginia Wesleyan rounding out the top eight.

Voting is done on a 1-10 basis with coaches prohibited from voting for their own teams in the poll.

Bridgewater received the remaining two first-place votes.

Shenandoah opens up the 2015 season on Feb. 14 with a non-league doubleheader against Misericordia and the ODAC slate on March 7 at Roanoke.
