SU roundup: Hornets garner baseball honors

FOREST — Shenandoah University has swept Old Dominion Athletic Conference baseball Player of the Week honors in selections announced Monday afternoon by the league office.

Senior J.J. McDaniel was named as the league’s Player of the Week, while junior Darrell Thompson earned Pitcher of the Week accolades.

McDaniel, who currently leads the No. 9/19 Hornets in hitting with a .417 average, hit .524 last week as SU went 4-1 with three conference victories.

The Stafford native had at least one hit in all five games, including a 4 for 5 contest in game one of a Saturday doubleheader sweep over previous conference leader Virginia Wesleyan.

McDaniel opened the week by going 3 for 4 versus York (Pa.), had one hit in both the Eastern Mennonite and Messiah contests and then was a combined 6 for 8 on Saturday versus VWC.

This is the second time in his career, and first this season, that he has earned ODAC Player of the Week accolades.

Thompson picks up the third ODAC weekly award of his career after tossing the first seven innings of that game one win over Virginia Wesleyan.

Thompson, the reigning ODAC Pitcher of the Year, allowed two unearned runs on four hits and one walk in seven innings while striking out eight.

He is currently sixth in the league in strikeouts and tied for fourth in conference victories.

Thompson is the third SU starter, after Michael Scimanico and Ryan Mossman, to earn ODAC Pitcher of the Week honors this season.

Shenandoah is back at it on Wednesday with a 4 p.m. home game against ODAC rival Bridgewater.
