Prep roundup: Cook leads Central past Strasburg in girls soccer

WOODSTOCK — Freshman Lauren Cook scored two goals and an assist to lead Central to a 3-1 Bull Run District victory over Strasburg on Friday night.

Cook scored on a Jenny Philpott assist with about 24 minutes left in the first half. Just 16 seconds later, Philpott scored on an assist from Cook. The Rams cut the lead to 2-1 on a penalty kick goal by Amelia Guthrie with around 35 minutes left in the contest. Cook added another goal for the Falcons with about six minutes left in the game on an assist from Cady Hockman.

Central (3-9-1) outshot Strasburg, 11-5. Central goalkeeper Vanessa Wheeler had four saves.

“I was very pleased,” Central coach Kim Dellinger said. “We’ve being having issues with being to finish. …We’ve spent a lot of time working on it in the last couple weeks. …I was very pleased. We did well today.”

WOODSTOCK — Mark and Ryan Smoot combined for a two-hitter as the Rams knocked off the Falcons in Bull Run District baseball action.

Mark Smoot went six innings on the mound, and his twin brother, Ryan, finished things off in the seventh. Central’s Brady Baker and Zach Hamman had the only hits of the game for the Falcons (5-11).

Strasburg (16-0) pounded out 10 hits in the victory.
