Prep roundup: Falcons get back-to-back pitching gems in wins

WOODSTOCK — Central High School freshman pitcher Luke Estep turned in a fantastic start on Friday against Rappahannock County, allowing just one hit in a five-inning shutout.

Estep was stellar, but teammate Hank Hoover did him one better in the nightcap of a Bull Run District baseball doubleheader, has Hoover fired a five-inning no-hitter to help the Falcons complete the sweep.

Hoover had a huge game all around for Central (5-9). He struck out eight batters for the complete-game win. At the plate, Hoover was 3-for-3 with a triple, a double and a pair of RBIs.

Also for the Falcons in the second game, Corey Sibert was 2-for-3 with a double and three RBIs.

In the opener, Estep also fanned eight batters in his five innings. He chipped in with a triple at the plate.

Tristan Rau paced Central’s offense with a 2-for-2 effort with an RBI. Zachary Hamman chipped in with a double and two RBIs.

Boys soccer

Central 4, Rappahannock County 0

WASHINGTON, Va. — Korey Wolford scored two goals as Central’s boys soccer team picked up a 4-0 win over Rappahannock County on the road in Bull Run District action Friday night.

Wolford opened the scoring with a goal in the 16th minute off an assist by Franklin Hernandez, and the Falcons (6-5) scored three more times in the second half while out-shooting the Panthers 30-3.

Tyler Bosserman scored a goal off an assist by Ben Truban five minutes into the second half, and Wolford scored his second goal of the night with 12 minutes remaining on an assist by Alfio Vasta. Ivan Alvarado rounded out the scoring with an unassisted goal in the 70th minute.

Freshman goalkeeper Dean Woodwell recorded two saves en route to his fourth shutout this spring.

Girls soccer

Stonewall Jackson 4, Wilson Memorial 2

QUICKSBURG – Stonewall Jackson’s girls soccer team avenged an earlier loss to Wilson Memorial by beating the visiting Green Hornets, 4-2, on Friday night.

The Generals (4-6, 4-5 Shenandoah District) had lost to Wilson Memorial (7-3, 6-2) 5-0 in their first meeting on April 7.

Freshman Lulu Funkhouser scored a goal and had two assists for Stonewall, which led 2-1 at halftime following first-half goals from junior Brittany Singleton and senior Emily Jordan. The Generals added two late goals in the second half, as senior Ally Hepner scored with eight minutes remaining and Funkhouser followed with a goal off Jordan’s assist six minutes later.

Sophomore goalkeeper Reganne Brinkley had 17 saves for the Generals.

Central 2, Rappahannock County 0

WOODSTOCK – Central’s girls soccer team picked up its second win of the season Friday night as the Falcons beat Bull Run District rival Rappahannock County, 2-0.

Freshman forward Bailey Gale had two assists for the Falcons (2-8-1), the first coming on freshman Ciara Philpott’s goal in the 25th minute. Sophomore Sydney Crosser scored the match’s second goal in the 38th minute.

Junior goalkeeper Vanessa Wheeler tallied six saves to record her second shutout of the season. Central outshot Rappahannock County, 10-6.
