Prep roundup: Warriors fall to Lancers in regionals
AMHERST — Sherando was unable to hang on to a lead on Tuesday night as the Warriors fell to Amherst, 7-4, in a Region 4A North baseball quarterfinal.
The Warriors led 4-3 in the bottom of the fifth when play was suspended on Monday due to rain. Sherando made the trip back on Tuesday, and the Lancers scored three runs in the bottom of the fifth to take the lead. All three runs were unearned as the Warriors made two costly errors in the inning.
“We needed nine more outs. We needed to play defense and not give them any extra outs and we didn’t do that,” Sherando coach Pepper Martin said.
Adam Whitacre pitched for the Warriors on Monday, but due to the Virginia High School League pitching regulations he wasn’t available on Tuesday. Ty Michaud pitched for Sherando on Tuesday and took the loss.
Whitacre went 1 for 2 with a double and an RBI, and Pearce Bucher was 1 for 3 with a single and two RBIs for the Warriors. Connor Stevenson also had a groundout RBI for Sherando.
Martin said he was happy with how the team played at the end of the season. Sherando qualified for regionals for the seventh straight season, despite having a losing record. The Warriors won seven of their last 11 games.
“With the inconsistency that we had all year and to finally come together as a team, and the guys to believe and trust in one another and have the playoff run we did, I couldn’t be any prouder of them,” Martin said. “…The last 27 innings we played we had two bad innings, which cost us the two games we lost.”
Region 3A East tennis
HOPEWELL — Skyline’s Stefano Trentini advanced to the Region 3A East final, and more importantly to next week’s Group 3A boys tennis state tournament.
Trentini defeated Kettle Run’s Andrew Rainger, 6-3, 6-2, in the quarterfinals. The Italian exchange student later beat Colonial Heights’ Jonathan Harston, 3-6, 6-3, 4-1 in the semifinals. Harston retired from the match due to injury.
“He was excited,” Skyline coach Deb Ramsey said in a phone interview. “He does not feel he’s best yet. He faced a better level of play and he played well. …[Trentini] kept [Harston] moving, and kept the ball deep and kept working after it.”
Trentini will play York’s Josh McFadden on Wednesday in the Region 3A East final at Mary Washington University. Both players advance to the state semifinals held at Liberty University on June 11.
Trentini will play with teammate Joey Park in the Region 3A East doubles tournament on Wednesday.
Warren County’s Jayme Goode lost in the girls tennis Region 3A East quarterfinals to James Monroe’s Lucy Castles, 6-1, 6-2. Goode and teammate Alyssa Pauley will play in the doubles quarterfinals Wednesday at Mary Washington University.
