SU roundup: Women’s basketball adds seven

WINCHESTER – Shenandoah University head women’s basketball coach Melissa Smeltzer-Kraft announced her 2015-16 recruiting class Wednesday morning.

Smeltzer-Kraft, preparing for her second season as the Hornets head coach, has added six freshmen and one transfer into the program for the upcoming year.

Guards Kit Gould (Fairfax/Robinson), Shannon Kuhn (East Berlin, Pa./Bermudia Springs) and Mia Moore (Lexington Park, Md./Great Mills) lead Smeltzer-Kraft’s first-ever recruiting class.

“Kit, a point guard, is a very savvy player,” Smeltzer-Kraft said. “Mia is athletic and Shannon a great shooter.

“I expect all three to come in and compete for playing time right away.”

The transfer, Casey Cummings, comes to SU after starting her career at DI St. Francis-Brooklyn.

Cummings, a Leesburg native and a Loudoun County graduate, played in all 24 contests for the Terriers as a freshman in 2012-13 and the initial 11 games for the NEC power in 2013-14.

Two of the remaining recruits: Ashley Spence and Amber Grimes, are local products from James Wood H.S. and Mountain View H.S., respectively.

Guard Kendra Isaacs (Baltimore, Md./Franklin) rounds out the class.

“This is my first class as head coach,” Smeltzer-Kraft said. “We are going to have a tremendous amount of depth, especially in the backcourt, and we look forward to seeing these student-athletes develop on- and off-the-court.”
