Fast start lifts Warriors over Hawks

FRONT ROYAL – Sherando football coach Bill Hall wanted his team to be ready to play from the opening snap and they were.

The Warriors took control of the game early en route to a 53-0 Northwestern District victory over Skyline on Friday night.

The Warriors were coming off their first loss of the season and Hall was looking for his team to respond to adversity.

“I challenged our guys to play football the Sherando way. To come out fast and physical and make sure we execute at a high level, and I thought we did a good job with that,” Hall said. “Football is so much more mental than it is physical. … You got to be ready to go emotionally and mentally, and I think our guys did a good job starting fast.”

It didn’t take long for the Warriors to take the lead. Sherando scored on the third play of the game, as quarterback Patrick Minteer connected with Michael Perry for a 52-yard touchdown pass less than two minutes into the contest.

“Michael Perry, he’s a sophomore. He hasn’t had a lot of catches and just to see him do something special like that it gets the whole team energized,” Minteer said.

On Sherando’s next possession, they again needed just a few plays to score. The Warriors went 77 yards in five plays. Running back DJ Myers had a 52-yard run, and followed that up with a 1-yard plunge for the score and a 14-0 lead with 6:24 left in the first quarter.

“It was just good blocking up front and my receiver, Jacquari (Hayes), he made a big play,” Myers said of his 52-yard run. “He was blocking down the field. I just had to do something.”

Sherando (8-1) added to the lead on its next possession. The Warriors drove 64 yards on 12 plays. Minteer threw a 4-yard touchdown pass to Hayes to take a 20-0 edge with 10:03 left in the first half.

The Warriors capped off the first half scoring with a six-play 51-yard drive. Minteer threw another touchdown pass to Hayes — a 29-yard score on third-and-12 – to give Sherando a 26-0 lead.

Minteer said it was important for the Warriors to bounce back after the loss last week to Fort Hill.

“I think we just needed a jumpstart,” Minteer said. “Obviously we were really hurt about not finishing undefeated, but I think that’s what we needed as a team. We can’t have that monkey hanging on our back where if you don’t go undefeated – well we’re not. So we have to focus on week-by-week and getting better each week at a time.”

Minteer went 9 for 15 passing for 158 yards. Myers led the ground game with 162 yards on 23 carries.

Sherando played without Dylan Rivers. The junior linebacker/tight end was on the sidelines in street clothes. Hall had no comment on why he wasn’t playing.

The Warriors held Skyline (5-4) to 103 yards of offense. Skyline quarterback Dylan Hamman threw for 87 yards.

“We just wanted our kids to do the best they could and I felt like they tried,” Skyline coach Heath Gilbert said. “… I felt like our kids were trying. As tough as it is we still have the opportunity to do some things at our level – Division 3 – and hopefully we can play a little bit better next week.”

Hall said he was pleased with the way the defense played against Skyline.

“We left some plays on the field, but it’s about all of our guys doing their job,” Hall said. “We talk a lot about being accountable to each other. Making sure that you’re pulling your weight and being the link to success. Obviously when we do good things like that, that’s what happens.”
