Loy, Plauger lead way for local golfers at state tourneys

Sherando’s Brett Loy and Central’s Joseph Plauger each had a solid opening day Monday on the first day of the Virginia High School League state golf tournaments.

Loy, the defending Group 4A state champion, is tied for 12th place in the Group 4A state tournament held at Glenrochie Country Club in Abingdon. He shot an 81 in the opening round.

Plauger fired an 83 and is in 10th place in the Group 2A state tournament held at Golden Eagle Golf Club in Irvington.

Strasburg’s Austin Stickles shot a 92 in the Group 2A state tournament. Stonewall Jackson’s Yash Desai fired a 93 in the Group 1A state tournament, which is also being held at Golden Eagle Golf Club in Irvington.

Loy is 11 shots behind individual leader Brandon Weaver, of Loudoun Valley, who shot a 70. Loudoun Valley is leading the 4A team competition after posting a 303 on the first day.

Lebanon’s Adam Hooker leads the Group 2A tournament after shooting a 75. Plauger shot a 42 on the front nine and a 41 on the back nine. Stickles had a 45 on the front nine and a 47 on the back nine.

Desai had a 48 on the front nine and a 45 on the back nine. Essex’s Carter Morgan leads the 1A individual tournament after shooting a 77 on the first day.

The second and final day of the tournaments will be held today, starting at 8:30 a.m.
