Falcons fall to Mustangs

WOODSTOCK – Central entered Friday’s game with George Mason with a five-game winning streak, but all that momentum came to a halt.

The Falcons struggled in a 43-19 loss to the Mustangs in the regular season finale for both teams. Both squads will be in the playoffs next week.

“I just didn’t recognize this team,” Central coach Mike Yew said. “That was not the same team that came out here the last five weeks. The team that won five in a row was not the team that we saw tonight. … We just didn’t seem like ourselves. But I don’t want us to take anything away from Mason. They made those things happen.”

Central took the early lead. The Falcons used 10 plays to go 73 yards. Hank Hoover did most of the damage with eight rushes. On second-and-5 from the George Mason 29, Central’s Carston Shockey scored on a 29-yard touchdown run with seven minutes left in the first quarter.

The Mustangs (7-3) answered early in the second quarter. After an interception by D’Montae Noble at midfield, the Mustangs needed only five plays to tie the game.

George Mason quarterback Thomas Creed found Dustin Green for a 21-yard touchdown pass with 10:23 left in the first half.

On George Mason’s next drive the Mustangs took the lead. Noble scored on a 79-yard touchdown with 8:19 left for a 15-7 edge.

“D’Montae’s a good player,” George Mason coach Tony Green said. “Like usual for us, he gives us everything he’s got.”

The Falcons (6-4) responded with Hoover. The senior ran 57 yards to move the ball to the George Mason 4. Hoover took it in for the score on the next play with 7:20 left. The two-point conversion failed as the Falcons trailed 15-13.

Noble extended the lead for the Falcons, but this time on defense. Noble intercepted a Jordon Hosaflook pass and returned it 45 yards for a touchdown with 3:07 left in first half. The two-point conversion pass from Creed to Green gave George Mason a 23-13 lead.

“The Noble kid’s a kid that you just can’t put the ball in his hands more than he’s already getting it, and we made that mistake a couple times tonight,” Yew said. “He made us pay for it.”

The Mustangs scored early in the third quarter on a 10-play 73-yard drive. Creed connected with Noble for a 23-yard touchdown pass with 7:57 left in the third quarter for a 31-13 lead.

The Falcons scored early in the fourth quarter on a 12-yard touchdown run by Hoover with 11:26 left to cut the lead to 31-19. However, the Mustangs scored two more touchdowns in the fourth quarter to put the game away.

“I just thought their kids were very physical, and they deserve all the credit for just coming out and being aggressive all night. They really were,” Yew said. “I thought that was the difference in the game. I thought their kids lined up and played hard every single snap.”

Noble ran for 149 yards on 18 carries, while Dustin Green had 73 yards on nine carries. The Mustangs finished with 295 yards rushing.

“We go to (Dustin Green) there and get a little bit out of him. Go to fullback Hunter (Sulc) get a little bit out of him,” Tony Green said. “We try to use all our backs in different ways. Hunter’s obviously a power back. Dustin’s a power back, and Dustin also has good hands. And D’Montae’s (Noble) just D’Montae.”

Hoover led the way for the Falcons with 211 yards on 26 carries.

Central will be on the road to start the playoffs, and Yew said the team needs to prepare and play much better next week.

“Next week our preparation has got to be better – coaches and players,” Yew said. “We got to prepare. We got to get ready for a playoff game.”
