SU roundup: Hornets fall to Randolph-Macon

ASHLAND – Randolph-Macon ended its five-game football losing streak Saturday with a 31-13 Old Dominion Athletic Conference victory over Shenandoah.

The Yellow Jackets (2-6, 1-4 ODAC) won for the first time since week two by rushing for 260 yards over the Hornets (4-4, 1-4).

Tailbacks John Byrd and Eric Hoy ran for 125 and 81 yards, respectively, and quarterback Joe McBride was 13 for 16 for 174 yards and two touchdowns to help give R-MC its seventh straight win over Shenandoah.

The Hornets were held to 244 yards on the day, 226 under their average coming into the contest, and struggled as Randolph-Macon held the ball for 38:19 of game time.

After tying the game 7-7 on an 8-yard Dalaun Richardson TD run at the 7:57 mark of the second, Shenandoah found itself trailing for the remainder of the contest as Randolph-Macon scored twice in the final 3:55 of the period.

The second score, a 25-yard touchdown pass from McBride to Christian Redman, came after SU had turned it over on a Travis Barton, Jr. interception with 2:45 to play.

The Hornets cut the lead to 21-13 in the third quarter on a Cedrick Delaney 1-yard touchdown run, but that’s as close as SU would get.

Hornets quarterback Hayden Bauserman finished the day 17 of 29 for 108 yards with Barton throwing for an additional 62 yards on five completions in nine attempts.

Delaney was held to a season-low 62 yards rushing on 12 carries.

Cedrick Bridges had 13 tackles to lead the defense with Malik Sims and Michael Messick making 10 stops each.
