Sherando outlasts James Wood

WINCHESTER – A.J. Outler scored 9 of his 11 points in the second half to propel Sherando to a 60-54 victory over arch-rival James Wood in Northwestern District/Conference 21-A action at the Warriors’ home court.

His important follow-up basket at the end of the third quarter gave Sherando (10-7 overall, 3-2 district) the impetus to outscore the Colonels 23-14 in the decisive fourth quarter.

“I tried to follow the ball to see which way the bump and I just jumped for it with God’s help,” said the senior guard on senior night for the Warriors in the girls-boys doubleheader.

Outler’s output, along with 11 for Alex Morefield and 10 for Michael Perry, were enough to extinguish an outstanding night for Wood sophomore guard Chandler Brooks, who had hit eight field goals and 17 points. Aidan Houser had 15, including a trio of 3-point bombs.

“That Chandler Brooks is an outstanding scorer and, even when he misses, he’s a threat to score again,” said Sherando coach Garland Williams.

It was a torrid affair for three quarters and then Outler made his putback.

There were five ties and five lead changes in the first half.

Sherando opened a 5-point lead as the third quarter started. But baskets by Andew Hinebaugh, Brooks and Houser pulled James Wood within 25-24. The lead changed hands until Sherando went ahead by 3.

Two free throws by Perry put the Sherando lead at 5 again. Then Outler followed up the shot at the third-quarter buzzer. The score was 37-30 Sherando after three quarters.

But a 3 by Houser and a Brooks bucket made it 39-37 with 6:23 left in the third quarter.

Miiler’s triple answered for Sherando and Outler’s two free throws and a bucket by Morefield had Sherando ahead by 7.

The Warriors extended their lead to 50-42 on a bucket by Perry.

Then Perry hit two free throws for the 10-point lead.

Sherando hit eight straight free throws to keep James Wood at bay.

“That’s something we work on. Coach calls us out or yells at us when we shoot in practice. It gets us ready,” said Morefield.
