The following are some of the area recreational events that are being held:
A 5K Walk You’ll Remember: Dedicated to Barbara Louwers will be held from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. April 2 at the Arboretum at James Madison University, 780 University Blvd., Harrisonburg.
The walk is held in memory of Louwers, wife of JMU accounting professor Tim Louwers. It is sponsored by members of Sigma Kappa and Tau Epsilon and benefits the Alzheimer’s Association. Registration is $15. Information, registration: www.runsignup.com/Race/Va.
Walk for ALS
The annual Paul’s Walk 5K for ALS will be held April 3 at the Edith J. Carrier Arboretum, 780 University Blvd., Harrisonburg. Registration, which is $10, ends March 30.
The walk is sponsored by Sigma Sigma Sigma and Pi Kappa Phi at James Madison University in honor of Paul Massey, father of Peter Massey, a JMU alumni and brother of Pi Kappa Phi.

Fallen Generals 5K Walk/Run
Stonewall Jackson High School will host the Fallen Generals 5K Walk/Run at 9 a.m. April 9.
Registration fee is $25. Early-bird registration ends April 4 and includes a free T-shirt. On-site registration will begin at 7:30 a.m. T-shirts will also be available race day for $10. Proceeds will support the high school, library and media center and the school’s clubs and organizations. Information: www.fallengenerals5K.weebly.com.
The Valley Runners will participate in the Miana Stewart Scholarship 5K Run/Walk starting at 9 a.m. April 9 at Musselman Middle School, 105 Pride Ave., Bunker Hill, West Virginia.
Stewart, a 14-year-old freshman at Musselman High, was killed when she walked in on a burglary at her home.
The course, which is on asphalt, grass, gravel and is mostly flat, goes around three of the schools and ends on the school track for the final lap.

Spring Thaw Run
The Spring Thaw Trail Run and MTB Trail Series – The Grant will be held April 9 at three locations:
The Greens, 41025 Willowsford Lane, Aldie; Conway Robinson State Forest, 13300 Lee Highway, Gainesville; and The Grant, Homestead Landing Court, Ashburn.

Bishop O’Connell 5K
The Bishop O’Connell 5K and Kids Fun Run will be held April 9 at Bishop O’Connell High School, 6600 Little Falls Road, Arlington. Information: 703-237-1446. Registration: www.bishopoconnell.org/page.cfm?p=1408.
The Lord Fairfax Community College Wellness Committee will host a 5K Walk/Run and Kids Fun Run on April 16 at the Student Union building on the Middletown campus.
Kids Fun Run starts at 8:30 a.m. and the 5K Walk/Run will begin at 9 a.m. Registration is $20 by March 25 or $25 after. Registration, information: www.lfcc.edu/5k.
Shenandoah Epic 26-hour Adventure Race, for beginner and experienced adventure racers, will be held starting at 7 a.m. April 16-17 at Skyline Ranch Resort, 751 Mountain Road, Front Royal.
Racers navigate by trekking, mountain biking and paddling as well as completing a challenge or two through George Washington National Forest, along the Shenandoah River and in Shenandoah River State Park.
There are three categories: soloist, two-person teams and four-person teams. The distance is 100-plus miles.
Prizes range from $50 to $500. Registration is $300 per team member or $325 for soloists.
Mud Dog Run
Mud Dog Run, a high intensity 5K obstacle course run around the Shenandoah County Fairgrounds in Woodstock, will be held April 16.
The race benefits Platoon 22, a nonprofit organization that helps veterans suffering from Post Traumatic Stress Disorder.
Registration is $61 through April 10, $69 after April 10 or $75 on race day. Runners must be over age 12. If under 18, a signed waiver by a parent or guardian is required. Online registration will close at midnight April 11. Registration is limited. Parking is $10 for each car space (cash only).
