Hornets open tournament with win on Herbaugh’s walk-off single

Zach Herbaugh delivered a walk-off single for Shenandoah University’s baseball team as the third-seeded Hornets rallied for a pair of ninth-inning runs in a 3-2 win over No. 4 Marietta College on Wednesday night in the opening round of the NCAA Division III South Regional.

Herbaugh, a 2014 Central High School graduate, sealed SU’s comeback with an RBI single on a 1-1 offering from Marietta ace Christian Herstine in the bottom of the ninth inning.

The catcher’s heroics came on the heels of a rally starting double by outfielder Lew Johnson, who scored on an RBI single by first baseman Luke Nussman that tied the game at 2-2. Nussman ended up at second following his single when he advanced on a throw to the plate, setting up Herbaugh’s game-winning single.

The Hornets’ rally made a winner of starting pitcher Mike Scimanico (8-1), who tossed a complete game against the Pioneers. The senior left-hander allowed two runs on seven hits while striking out two and not walking a batter.

Herbaugh and Nussman each had two hits for Shenandoah, which tallied eight total off Herstine (8.2 innings pitched, three earned runs, eight strikeouts).

The Hornets took a 1-0 lead in the fourth inning on Jake Loew’s RBI groundout before Marietta came back with single runs in the sixth and seventh innings.

The win puts SU into a 6 p.m. game Thursday against second-seeded Birmingham-Southern. The Hornets will be the home team.
