The following are some of the area recreational events that are being held:
The Shenandoah River-Andy Guest Jr. State Park will join other state parks in hosting the Great American Campout, sponsored by the National Wildlife Foundation in observance of Great Outdoors Month, starting at 5 p.m. Saturday.
A ranger will be available to provide guidance and to lead fun activities. A campfire will be held at 7 p.m. followed by an evening hike down the Cottonwood Boardwalk to listen to nocturnal life. Campers will learn to identify the calls of various frogs and use an owl caller to hunt for owls.

The Virginia Kids Trail Bucket Buddy Adventure is helping kids explore fitness through outdoor adventure partners. There are four locations for kids to plan a hike then do a zip-line or rafting trip, explore a lake then zip-line through the mountains, do a ropes adventure course, ride the river rapids, summer tube down a hillside or segway through the woods. Kids can also sit on Jefferson’s Rock or climb the Woodstock Tower and see the seven bends of the Shenandoah River.
Kids win a prize at each stop on their visit and then again when they complete the Bucket Buddy card. Information: 540-668-9007.
