Central, Strasburg playoff football games highlight week

The Virginia High School League football playoffs begin this weekend and two local teams will be in action.

Central and Strasburg will be playing in the Region 2A East first round. Central will be the fifth seed, while Strasburg will be the eighth seed.

Both teams will host first round games at 7 p.m., Friday.

King William (7-3) at Strasburg (7-3): The Rams are coming off a tough loss to William Monroe. King William is coming off a 90-18 victory over King and Queen.

King William opened the season with a 62-30 loss to Madison County, who the Rams beat earlier this season.

Bluestone (5-5) at Central (8-2): The Falcons finished with a share of the Bull Run District title this season. Central capped off a strong regular season with a 21-0 win over George Mason.

Bluestone has lost three of its last four games, but did defeat Amelia County, 39-6, to end the regular season.

Cross country

The state cross country championships will be held Friday at Great Meadow in The Plains.

Skyline and Warren County will have a combined three individuals in the Group 3A races. The Group 3A girls race will be held at 10:30 a.m. with Skyline’s Carrie Hotek and Sabrina Wilkins participating. The Group 3A boys race will be held at 11:15 a.m. with Warren County’s Bailey Grant running in that.

Strasburg’s Grace and Hannah Dellinger and Rachel Palmer and Central’s Olivia Wightman will run in the Group 2A girls race at 11:45 a.m.

Central’s boys team will be in the Group 2A boys race at 12:30 p.m. The Falcons were the state runners-up last year, and were the Region 2A East runners-up last week for a second straight year.

“We’re really excited to go back,” Central junior Gus Wightman said. “We’re going to try to repeat what we did last year as a team, and I think we can do that.”

Strasburg’s Ryan Davis will also run in the Group 2A boys race.

Stonewall Jackson’s girls team will run in the Group 1A race at 1 p.m. The Generals finished third in the Region 1A East meet last week. Stonewall Jackson’s Brandy Webb won the Region 1A East title last week, while teammate LuLu Funkhouser was second.

“This week is going to be a tough week for us,” Funkhouser said. “We’re going to train hard. We’re going to do good work, and just go with the flow and see how the race happens.”

Stonewall Jackson’s Kaelan Sorrells and Mark Keith will be running in the Group 1A boys race at 1:45 p.m.


Massanutten Military Academy’s postgraduate team hosts two games this week. The Colonels host Prestige Prep on Tuesday, and Combine Academy on Wednesday. Both start times are 7 p.m.

JMU’s women’s basketball team has its season opener on Friday. The Dukes host powerhouse program University of Tennessee at 7 p.m.

The JMU men’s basketball team plays at Old Dominion University at 7 p.m., Friday.
