Central’s Funkhouser wins two state swim titles
Ashley Funkhouser reached her goal.
The Central junior hoped to win two individual state swimming titles and she achieved her goal Wednesday evening at the Group 2A state meet in Christiansburg.
Funkhouser, who won the 50-yard freestyle last year, duplicated that feat and added a 100-yard freestyle state championship to her resume. She won the 50 freestyle with a time of 24.65 and the 100 freestyle with a time of 54.28.
On Feb. 4, she won the regional titles in both events. Central coach Steve Shaffer said earlier this week he felt good about Funkhouser’s chances.
He said that last year’s state title has helped Funkhouser throughout the season.
“She surprised us all last year with an outstanding couple of swims,” Shaffer said earlier this week. “She has learned a great deal about herself and what she needs to do to take the successes of last year to the next level.”
Funkhouser defended her 50 freestyle first and then won the 100 freestyle later in the evening.
No further details were known at press time Wednesday.
