Shepherd coach Cater to be guest at ABF Sports Breakfast
Shepherd University head football coach Monte Cater will be a guest at this year’s Partlow Insurance Sports Breakfast, according to a Shenandoah Apple Blossom Festival news release.
Cater led Shepherd to the Division II National Championship game in 2015. He is Shepherd’s all-time winningest coach and has been the head coach for 30 years. He has compiled a 235-92-1 record (.718) in his time at Shepherd.
He started his collegiate coaching career at his alma mater Millikin University, which is in Decatur, Illinois. He was the offensive line coach and the co-offensive coordinator.
His first head coaching job was at Lakeland College in Sheboygan, Wisconsin, in 1981. In six years, Cater had a 30-24-1 record.
He then became the head coach at Shepherd in 1987. The Rams have went to the playoffs 12 times.
In 1992, the Rams advanced to the NAIA Division I semifinals. In 2010, the Rams made it to the NCAA Division II semifinals. They also advanced to the Division II semifinals last season.
Cater’s overall head coaching record is 266-115-2 (.697). He holds the all-time mark for coaching victories in the West Virginia Intercollegiate Athletic Conference and is among the tops among active coaches in Division II.
The last two seasons the Rams have went a combined 26-2, and have won the Mountain East Conference title three of the last four years.
Cater has served as a member of the NCAA Division II Football Committee with a stint as a regional chair.
He and his wife, Bonnie, reside in Martinsburg, West Virginia, with their daughter, Taylor, and son, Logan.
The Partlow Insurance Sports Breakfast will be held at 8 a.m. May 6. There are approximately 700 tickets printed for the breakfast.
