On Campus Notebook: Harlow picks up big victory for Dukes
Colton Harlow (Stonewall Jackson ’14) played a big part in James Madison University’s baseball success this past weekend.
The junior pitcher went 5.2 innings on Saturday in a 7-4 victory over Towson University.
Harlow picked up the win, struck out two with one walk.
On April 26, Harlow pitched 1.2 innings in a win against Longwood University. He struck out one in the 16-0 victory.
For the season, Harlow is 2-2 with a 5.07 ERA. He has thrown 60.1 innings, which is most on the team. He also leads the Dukes with 52 strikeouts and has given up just 21 walks.
JMU won two out of three games against Towson over the weekend.
The Dukes are 21-22 on the season, including 5-13 in the Colonial Athletic Association.
Harlow has appeared in 12 games, including a team-best 11 starts.
SHERANDO TRIFECTA: A trio of Sherando standouts continue to put up impressive numbers this season for Shepherd University.
Reid Entsminger (Sherando ’14) leads the Rams in batting average. The sophomore is batting .377 (23-for-61) with 18 runs scored, three home runs, 13 RBIs, one double and one triple. Entsminger has played in 32 games, including 13 starts.
Jacob Carney (Sherando ’13) is batting .343 (60-for-175) with three home runs, 22 RBIs, 44 runs scored and seven doubles. Carney has played and started all 48 contests for the Rams.
John Bentley (Sherando ’13) is 5-4 on the mound for the Rams this season. The senior pitcher has started 12 games and has a 5.06 ERA. Bentley has two complete games and has thrown 66 strikeouts, second on the team.
Entsminger went a combined 3-for-6 in a doubleheader with Fairmont State University on Sunday. He scored two runs and had an RBI in the two victories.
Carney had three hits and three RBIs in a victory over West Liberty on April 21. He had a double and a home run in the game.
Bentley went seven innings and picked up a win in a 15-0 victory over Notre Dame College on April 29. Bentley allowed just two hits and struck out seven in the victory.
The Rams are 28-21 on the season, including 24-8 in the Mountain East Conference. They begin play in the Mountain East Conference Tournament in Beckley, West Virginia, on Thursday.
SURGING HITTER: Adam Whitacre (Sherando ’15) has been on a tear for Radford University’s baseball team recently.
The sophomore is hitting .333 (12-for-36) over his last seven games. Whitacre has had at least two hits in five of his last games.
On Saturday, Whitacre went 2-for-5 with three runs scored in a victory over UNC Asheville. He had a double and a triple in the game.
He had a combined three hits in a doubleheader with UNC Asheville on Sunday with a run scored and an RBI.
Whitacre is batting .255 (39-for-153) for the season with one homer, five doubles, 24 runs scored and 12 RBIs. Whitacre also has seven stolen bases. He has started all 41 games this season.
The Highlanders are 20-25 overall, including 8-10 in the Big South Conference.
