Generals lose hard-fought game at Luray

Daily Staff Reports

Bulldogs 5, Generals 1

LURAY — One day after picking up its first victory of the season, Stonewall Jackson lost a hard-fought softball game to first-place Luray, 5-1.

The Generals, who beat Buffalo Gap, 8-4, on Thursday, fell victim to a five-run inning in losing to the Bulldogs, who currently lead the Shenandoah District with an undefeated record.

Stonewall Jackson head coach Mike Hunt cited the pitching of Marcy Beall and defensive efforts of Barbie Harlow as reasons for the Generals' turnaround and competitive game with Luray.

"They got six hits in one inning, otherwise Marcy Beall pitched an outstanding game," Hunt said. "They are a very, very good Luray team."

Harlow, whose defense aided the Generals in their first win, impressed her coach with her play up the middle at shortstop.

"She was also outstanding," Hunt said. "She kind of set the tone for us defensively."

Kaitlin O'Donnell, who played all seven innings at catcher, helped the Generals produce their only run when she doubled in the top of the sixth inning.

She then scored on an Alex Gibson single.

Brittany Wymer singled in the third inning to break up a no-hitter.

Bulldogs 9, Generals 2

LURAY — Stonewall Jackson fell at Luray, 9-2, on Friday night in Shenandoah District baseball, although the Generals' pitching staff allowed just four hits.

Luray scored three runs in the bottom of the first, fourth and fifth innings en route to the comfortable win.

The Generals got on the board in the top of the seventh after Bobby Lin homered.

Thursday's results

WOODSTOCK — Brea Hinegardner can do it all.

The pitcher/slugger hurled a shutout over five innings, and managed to belt a pair of home runs in Central's 15-0 rout of Warren County in Northwestern District softball on Thursday.

Hinegardner finished the night 3-for-4 with three extra-base hits and three runs. In addition to her two home runs, her third and fourth of the season, Hinegardner tripled and drove in six.

Central tallied 11 runs in the bottom of the first inning to blow the game open.

"We finally came out on fire in the first inning," Central coach Jill Yew said. "They finally got it together in the first inning, which is what we needed to do."

Kristyn Romick also homered for the Falcons. She scored three runs and had three RBIs.

Hinegardner also struck out seven.

Panthers 1, Eagles 0, 9 innings

WASHINGTON, Va. — Rappahannock County's Laura Carperton led off the bottom of the ninth with a double and two batters later scored the game-winning run as the Panthers knocked off the Eagles in Bull Run District action.

The Eagles had six hits in the game, but couldn't get them at the key times to score a run. Brianna Smith and Tara Fields each went 2-for-4 to lead the Eagles (9-7, 4-2 Bull Run).

Colonels 13, Hawks 9

WINCHESTER — James Wood used five consecutive hits to score five runs in the sixth inning for a Northwestern District victory over Skyline.

The Colonels trailed 9-8 entering the bottom of the sixth before the bats came to life. Ashley Nichols went 3-for-4 with two runs scored and two RBIs and Lauren Myers was 3-for-4 with a three-run triple to lead the Colonels (7-9, 5-5 Northwestern). Whitney Dennis, Sarah Price, Rachel Wetsel and Amanda Morrison each had two hits for James Wood. Morrison picked up the win on the pitching circle.

"Amanda [Morrison] did a good job. She retired the last seven batters she faced," James Wood coach Ted McDaniel said. "It was a great win. We were playing without two of our starters — Shiela Armel and Carly Lewis are out injured right now."

Megan Augugliaro, Erica Phillips and Julie Shiflett each had two hits for the Hawks (6-6, 5-4 Northwestern). Shiflett also drove in two runs.

Hawks 2, Colonels 0

WINCHESTER — Struggling James Wood was blanked by Aaron Ciarrocchi and Skyline.

The Colonels (6-4, 4-4 Northwestern) lost their third consecutive district match, while the Hawks (5-6, 3-6) won their second in a row.

Once again, Ben Medcalf had a hand in the scoring, tallying a goal in the 13th minute off a corner kick by Ronald Green.

Jacob Weakly added an insurance goal, which was again assisted by Green.

Ciarrocchi got the shutout in goal, stopping nine shots.

Judges 2, Wildcats 1

FRONT ROYAL — Matt Brannon tallied the game-winning goal with 9:39 left as Handley kept its unbeaten record intact.

The Judges (11-0-1, 9-0-1 Northwestern) fell behind early on a penalty kick, but a Randolph Boppe goal with 11:45 left of the first half tied the game at 1-1.

Girls soccer

Rams 5, Cougars 2

STRASBURG — Kayla Del'Aguila had two goals and an assist to lead Strasburg to a Bull Run District victory over Manassas Park.

Kaitlin Carter had a goal and two assists and Ann Keller had a goal and an assist for the Rams (2-11, 2-5 Bull Run). Casey Swanger had a goal and Kelsey Conde had an assist for Strasburg. The Rams outshot the Cougars 21-13. Strasburg keeper Dara Dillman had nine saves for the Rams.

Baseball

Wildcats 10-8, Yellow Jackets 0-0

FRONT ROYAL — Kitt Schindler and Logan Hibbs combined on a five-inning no-hitter in the second game as Warren County swept a doubleheader from Randolph-Macon Academy in nondistrict action. Both games only went five innings.

Schindler and Hibbs only had one combined strikeout, but the Wildcats defense did its part behind them. Jon Nicholson went 3-for-3 in the game to lead the Wildcats. In the first game, Nicholson had two homers in the opening game and went 3-for-4 with four RBIs. Nicholson also picked up the win on the mound and struck out four. Cody Zimmerman, Thomas Tudor and Connor Hutzell each had two hits for the Wildcats (5-11, 2-8 Northwestern).

Chris Abare went 2-for-3 for the Yellow Jackets and Robbie Sittman and Harry Fulwiler each went 1-for-2.

Hawks 4, Colonels 3 first game 10 innings

WINCHESTER — Skyline rallied in the seventh inning to tie the game and eventually pulled out a Northwestern District victory over James Wood. The Colonels won the second game, which was a five-inning non-district contest.

In the first game the Colonels led 3-2 entering the seventh, but a lead-off walk led to the game tying score. Jon King scored the game-winning run in the 10th inning on an error.

Tim Spore went 4-for-5 with an RBI and Brandon Ewing went 3-for-5 with an RBI for the Colonels in the opening game. James Wood scored six runs in the first inning of the second game and didn't look back. Tyler Orndorff went 2-for-2 with a home run and five RBIs to lead the Colonels (11-4, 6-4). Spore, Dustin Russell and Brandon Sinecoff each had two hits for James Wood.

"The first game was disappointing," James Wood coach Jared Mounts said. "To be up 3-2 and end up losing is tough. You have to give credit to Skyline."

Eagles 6, Panthers 5, 10 innings

WASHINGTON, Va. — Dustin Morgan threw a 10-inning complete game to position Clarke County for a win over Rappahannock.

The Eagles (4-12, 2-4 Bull Run) scored twice in the top of the 10th inning, and Morgan stayed in the game to preserve the win.

Morgan struck out six and walked three in a 133-pitch outing. He was also intentionally walked four times at the plate.

Tyler Lee added three hits, a triple and two stolen bases, while Derek Thomas and Cliff Webb each had two RBIs.
