AP all-state selections: Brewer on first team as sophomore

By Tim Tassa -- Daily Staff Writer

WINCHESTER — Although she just finished winning an Amateur Athletic Union Division 1-A state championship for the Fairfax Stars, Handley sophomore guard Jackie Brewer still has hardware to collect from her superb high school season for the Judges.

On Wednesday, joining Devon Brown (Group AA Player of the Year) of Waynesboro, Abby Oliver and Kylee Beecher of Hidden Valley and Joyous Tharrington of Brookville, Brewer was selected to The Associated Press' Group AA all-state girls basketball first team.

"It's a great accomplishment to get it, and for my team," said Brewer, who averaged 25.1 points, 8.6 rebounds, 3.4 assists and 2.9 steals per game for Handley.

"I got a thousand [career] points and I think I did pretty good this year, better than last year. I wish we would've gone further in the tournament, though."

Brewer guided the Judges to a 16-7 overall record and to the semifinals of the Northwestern District tournament, where they fell to Millbrook, 58-51.

"She had a very good season this year, she helped a very young team to a very successful year," said Handley head coach Marvin Scott, whose team had just two seniors.

"That's a heck of an accomplishment for a sophomore, I'm glad to have her."

Brewer is the lone non-senior on the first team, and aside from Kimmy Hopkins of Brentsville, who garnered second-team honors, she is the only district representative. Brewer's season was best defined by a two-game stretch in January against Millbrook and James Wood, when she scored 42 and 40 points, respectively.

"That's for her being a cut above. It's one thing to be able to possess the skills to play a sport, but it's another thing to possess the skills to play a sport at her level and then make others good, and that's what this young lady provides us," Scott said.

Brewer said she's going to keep working hard, setting sights on 2,000 career points for her junior and senior seasons, after scoring her 1,000th in only two seasons of varsity ball.

"Sky's the limit for this young lady. As far as she wants to go, she can go," Scott said. "She possesses the talent to play at the next level — at the very competitive next level."
