SportsThursday, June 19, 2008 All-Area Girls Tennis TeamPlayer of the Year: Elizabeth Gardiner, Handley Coach of the Year: Rob Haskiell, James Wood First team *Elizabeth Gardiner, Handley The junior won the Region II individual singles title and advanced to the Group AA state semifinals. Gardiner also won the district individual singles and teamed with Mykenzie Garrett to win the doubles title. *Katie Gordon, Handley The sophomore lost only one match at No. 3 singles this season for the Judges. Gordon helped lead Handley to its second-straight Group AA state championship. *Sarah Moomau, Handley The sophomore went undefeated for the Judges this season, playing at both the No. 1 and No. 2 singles spots. She also went undefeated at No. 2 doubles with Katie Gordon. The pair clinched the team match for the Judges in their final three matches of the year. *Kari Pope, James Wood The junior, who transferred from Isle of Wright Academy this year, advanced to the Region II individual singles quarterfinals. Pope also teamed with Headley Wilson to win the Group AA individual doubles state title. *Erin Spinks, Millbrook The junior advanced to the Northwestern District individual singles semifinals, where she lost to Kari Pope. Spinks also helped guide a young Pioneers squad to the district tournament semifinals with an 8-9 record. *Headley Wilson, James Wood The freshman paired with Kari Pope to win the Group AA individual doubles state title. Wilson also helped lead the Colonels to a 13-4 record, after the program only had a combined two wins in the last three seasons.
