Errors plague Skyline in district contest

Daily Staff Reports

FRONT ROYAL — Seven errors by Skyline and a seven-run third inning for Handley paved the way for an 8-4 Judges win in Front Royal on Tuesday.

"We struggled defensively tonight," Skyline coach Richard Armstrong said. "In the third inning, Handley just hit the ball well. They had seven-straight hitters reach base, five on hits. We just couldn't battle back after that."

Chelsea Albanese had a two-run single for Skyline, which dropped to 7-7 and 6-5 in the district. Meagan Augugliaro picked up the loss.

Logan Clarke and Danielle Walls each went 3-for-4 for Handley, and Walls drove in a pair of runs. Shanita Morgan two doubles and Lauren Yaider and Kayla Lewis two hits each for the Judges (2-15, 2-10 Northwestern). The Judges have lost several close games recently and finally got the breakthrough win they were looking for.

"This was a real big win," Handley coach Tim Mondell said. "They knew we were right there. It's just perseverance."

Mountaineers 9, Eagles 8

MADISON — Lauren Yowell's two-run double in the seventh inning lifted Madison County to a Bull Run District win over Clarke County.

Cheslea Korbini had a three-run homer and Lauren McCabe had three RBis for the Eagles (9-8, 4-3 Bull Run). Jordan Wolford went 3-for-4 with two doubles and two RBIs and Rachel Buckner was 2-for-4 for Clarke County.

FALLS CHURCH — Mike Murphy threw a complete-game shutout to lead Strasburg past George Mason, 5-0.

"He had good command of his pitches today," assistant coach Joel Morgan said of Murphy, who struck out seven and allowed five hits. "He was able to throw his breaking ball for a strike, and had good control — didn't walk anybody."

Derek Buckley went 2-for-3 with an RBI for Strasburg, which improved to 14-2 overall.

"We're 5-2 in the district and Madison is 6-1, and we've got Madison coming here Friday night, and that could end up being a big game," Morgan said. [The win] kept us in a position where, if we take care of our own business, we can be where we want to be at the end of the year."

Judges 5, Hawks 2

WINCHESTER — Chase Brown and Brendan Ahrnsbrak combined to throw a two-hitter and led Handley to a Northwestern District win over Skyline.

"They just threw strikes," Handley coach Eddie Simmons said. "The defense played pretty fair behind them. We had some clutch hits for a change."

Brown has been in and out of the hospital over the last few days due to kidney stone problems. He was cleared by doctors to play, but collapsed after getting a hit in the third innings and had to leave the game.

Cody Shanholtz went 2-for-3 with a run scored and two RBIs and C.J. Pilong went 2-for-3 with two runs scored for the Judges (9-9, 4-8 Northwestern).

Colonels 7, Wildcats 5

FRONT ROYAL — Cory Asberry allowed three runs on three hits and two walks over six innings as James Wood took advantage of a sloppy Warren County team for a 7-5 win.

"We executed small-ball early on, had several bunts, executed the squeeze twice and got a good pitching performance from Cory Asberry," James Wood coach Jared Mounts said.

Danny Cooper went 2-for-3 for the Colonels, who improved to 13-5 overall and 7-5 in the Northwestern District. Hunter Leight and Brock Lockhart each went 1-for-3 with an RBI.

For the Wildcats (6-12, 3-9 Northwestern), Jon Nicholson went 2-for-4 with an RBI, Cody Zimmerman doubled home a pair of runs and Sean Hoisington hit a home run.

Judges 3, Hawks 0

FRONT ROYAL — Handley clinched the Northwestern District regular season title with a win over Skyline in Northwestern District action. The win gives the Judges an automatic Region II berth.

"This was huge for us," Handley coach Cosmo Balio said. "We've earned a home game for the region, that's a big thing for us. We missed out on getting to the region last year and we really wanted to get back there. It's nice to get that out of the way."

Zac Gordon had two goals and William Bayliss had a goal to lead the Judges (12-0-2, 10-0-2 Northwestern). Elliott Butler, Will Major and Randolph Boppe each had an assist for the Judges. Handley outshot Skyline, 19-4.

Eagles 2, Mountaineers 1

BERRYVILLE — Bryant Henriquez scored his 11th goal and added an assist as Clarke County beat Madison County 2-1.

Henriquez scored in the 28th minute off his own rebound as the ball spurted away from the keeper.

"Bryant just blasted it right over his head," head coach Andrew Porter said.

Then, with 27 minutes left in the game, Henriquez sent a cross to Denis Vilanueva, who poked it past the keeper for his seventh goal of the season.

Clarke improved to 5-7-1 and 5-2-1 in the district.

"Madison was the team that we were worried about that could possibly take away our second seed for the district tournament," Porter said. "Unless we have some catastrophic failure between now and then, we'll probably be all right. We'll probably finish second."

Warriors 6, Falcons 0

WOODSTOCK — Ashley Sawyer had two goals and an assist and Sherando set a school record with its eighth shutout of the season.

Brooke Mort, Daryl deLadurantaye, Katie Harbacevich and Lainie Weadon also contributed with goals, and Sawyer, deLadurantaye, Nikki Rhodes, Nicole Dirnagl and Jenny Ice had assists.

Harbacevich's goal came on a penalty kick.

The Warriors run their record to 10-3-1 overall, and 8-3-1 in the Northwestern District with the win.
