Dirnagl, Baker anchor Bridgewater's volleyball team

By Tommy Keeler Jr. -- Daily Staff Writer

Tim Maypray (Randolph-Macon Academy '06) has been doing a little bit of everything for Virginia Military Institute this season.

The junior moved from running back/return specialist to quarterback for the football team. Maypray has started at quarterback all three games, sharing time with two others, and leads the team in passing and rushing. He has 323 yards rushing on 40 carries and four touchdowns.

Maypray has also completed 4-of-4 passes for 94 yards through the air. One of Maypray's targets is his former R-MA teammate Mario Scott (R-MA '07). Scott leads the team in receiving with three receptions for 28 yards. Maypray also has one reception for 12 yards.

Andy Viola (Stonewall Jackson '05) is making an impact on the defensive side of the ball for the Keydets. Viola has eight tackles and has forced one fumble. Butch Kaczmarzewski (Millbrook '08) has played in two of the Keydets' first three games.

VMI is 2-1 on the season and plays at Ohio University on Saturday. VMI won its season opener over Saint Francis (Pa.), 59-0. Maypray had two rushing touchdowns and ran for 116 yards on 10 carries. Scott had two receptions for 18 yards, including a 7-yard pass from Maypray.

On Sept. 13, William and Mary defeated VMI, 52-17, but Maypray still managed 134 yards on 26 carries. In last week's 69-20 victory over Chowan, Maypray had 73 yards on four carries for the Keydets.

ONE-TWO PUNCH: Erika Dirnagl (Sherando '06) and Katie Baker (Strasburg '08) have provided quite a spark for Bridgewater's volleyball team this season.

The pair have helped guide the Eagles to an 11-2 start and are the top two in several statistical categories. Last weekend, the Eagles went 3-1 in the Bridgewater College Invitational. They beat Southern Virginia, Randolph College and Sweet Briar before falling to Pomona-Pitzer. Dirnagl made the all-tournament team and led the team with 39 kills in the four matches.

Dirnagl was also named the Old Dominion Athletic Conference Player of the Week for her play last week. The Eagles went 4-1 on the week and Dirnagl averaged more than 3 kills per game during the week.

Bridgewater beat Eastern Mennonite University on Sept. 17, and Dirnagl led the way with 13 kills in the match.

Dirnagl leads the team with 123 kills and is second on the team in aces (19) and blocks (22). Baker leads the team in blocks (36) and is second behind Dirnagl in kills with 105.

QUICK STUDY: Katheryne Lawson (Clarke County '08) hasn't wasted any time in adjusting to play at the collegiate level. Lawson has played a big part in Colgate's success in soccer this season.

Lawson has played in three games and started in two for the Raiders. On Sept. 19, Lawson scored the game-winning goal to lead Colgate to a 2-1 win over Vermont. She scored the goal in the first half to give the Raiders a 2-0 lead. Colgate then held off Vermont in the second for the win.

The freshman midfielder/defender was also named the Patriot League/BRINE Defensive Player of the Week for her play last week. She helped lead a defense which gave up only two goals in two games. The Raiders went 1-0-1 on the week. The Raiders are 2-6-1 on the season, but haven't played any conference games yet.
