Eagles trounce Panthers

By Alyssa Goodson — Daily Sports Correspondent

BERRYVILLE — With the ball in the hands of Sam Shiley on Friday night, Clarke County was on top of the world.

Shiley played the dual role of quarterback and running back, passing for 137 yards and rushing for 180 yards in Clarke's 24-6 victory over Page County.

"Our game plan has always been to run," Shiley said. "But lately we've been starting to add more passing in and I really think that throws the defenses off. They have to think more about who to cover on each play."

Clarke County only needed seven plays to score on its first drive, including a 32-yard pass by Shiley to Scott Douglas and four Shiley rushes. Shiley swung out to the right from two yards out on his fourth run, and easily made it into the end zone.

"Clarke's got a great offensive line," Page County coach Frank Comer said. "They did an excellent job blocking for Shiley tonight and he was able to run all over us."

The Eagles scored again on their next drive, moving down the field with the help of five Shiley carries. This time however, it was Shiley's right-hand man, Grant Shaw, who plowed through defenders from the 3-yard-line to score with four minutes remaining in the first quarter.

"Grant is a huge asset to us," Clarke County coach Chris Parker said. "We can rely on him to get the yardage when we ask him to. He's the reason why our single-wing offense works so well. Grant and Sam are our one-two punch."

Clarke County had the opportunity for a touchdown on its next drive, but was penalized twice moving the ball from the Page County 2-yard line to the 20. The Eagles were forced to be content with a Nick Smetanick field goal to bring the score to 17-0.

"Penalties killed us tonight," Parker said. "We were penalized for over 100 yards. We can't keep doing that. It kept us from scoring more than once."

The Eagles faced red zone woes in the third quarter, reaching the 1-yard line on a 16-yard drive and being forced to hand the ball over after an unsuccessful fourth-down attempt.

However, they managed to turn it around in the next quarter. Shiley threw a 3-yard touchdown pass to a wide-open Shaw in the end zone.

"Grant and I work great together," Shiley said. "When we're on the field together, we're almost unstoppable."

Page County managed to score a touchdown before the end of the game to prevent a shutout. Dakota Wolf connected with Justin Breeden for an 84-yard touchdown pass to bring the score to 24-6 with 30 seconds remaining. Vincenzo Coppola's extra point was blocked, adding icing to the win for Clarke County.

"Clarke's a great team with strong, smart players," Comer said. "We knew they were going to be tough."
