Generals bust out for 19 runs, pick up second district win

Daily Staff Reports

QUICKSBURG — Stonewall took advantage of seven walks and a hit batter to score nine fourth-inning runs en route to a 19-4 win.

"The nice thing about tonight's win is again we're seeing some consistency at this point in the season," Stonewall coach Mike Hunt said. "And it's a good time for that to be happening to us."

Odessa Ryan picked up her seventh win of the season, striking out six, walking one and allowing two earned runs.

"This is probably her best outing of the season to this point," Hunt said.

Ryan aided herself at the plate, going 2-4 with a double and three RBIs. Kaitlyn O'Donnell chipped in with a single, a double, four runs and four RBIs, and Alex Gibson went 3-4 with two doubles and six RBIs.

The Generals improved to 2-14 and 2-5 in the Shenandoah.

Hawks 8, Wildcats 3

FRONT ROYAL — Kaitlin Robinson hit a three-run homer as Skyline beat Warren County 8-3 on Monday. Megan Agugi went 3-4, Chelsea Albanese went 2-3 and Tootie Jackson went 2-4 for Skyline, which improved to 7-6 and 6-4 in the district.

Tommi Michael went 3-3 for Warren County and Melissa Thomasson went 2-3 with 2 RBIs.

WINCHESTER — A pair of complete games and a strong night at the plate by Brendan Ahrnsbrak paved the way for a 6-5 and 7-4 Handley sweep of Briar Woods in a doubleheader.

"We've got four games this week, so it's nice to have kids go the whole way there," Handley coach Eddie Simmons said of pitchers Chris Stryker and David Joyner, respectively. Ahrnsbrak went 2-3 with a run and an RBI in Stryker's Game 1 win, then went 2-3 with a run and two RBI's in Joyner's Game 2 victory.

"He also played tremendously at second base," Simmons said. "Our infield turned four double plays."

Brett Bergin was 3-3 with 3 RBIs in the twinbill for Handley, which improved to 8-9 and 3-8 in the district.

Wildcats 9, Hawks 1

FRONT ROYAL — Shawn Brown dominated the Skyline bats, leading the Wildcats to a 9-1 win over their Front Royal rivals.

"They definitely couldnt sit on anything. He mixed up his pitches well, kept the ball down," Warren County coach Vernon Matthews said. "Just his normal effort, which is outstanding."

Brown went the distance, striking out 10 and allowing two hits, two walks and no earned runs.

"We just gave him run support tonight," Matthews said.

Sean Hoisington had a bases-clearing double in the fourth and a solo home run in the sixth for the Wildcats (6-11, 3-8 Northwestern).

Tigers 4, Colonels 0

NOKESVILLE — The Colonels made two errors in the sixth inning to allow Brentsville to tack on three runs and doom any chances of a James Wood comeback. The Colonels fell 4-0 on the road, dropping them to 12-5 and 6-5 in the district.

Danny Cooper went 2-3 with a triple for James Wood.

Falcons 4, Warriors 3

WOODSTOCK — Sherando got a runner to third with no outs in the seventh inning, but couldn't tie it up as Central won, 4-3.

Bryan Davis picked up the save by dousing the Warrior rally in the seventh to preserve Anthony Frye's strong effort.

"Frye pitched a great game and kept us in it, and Bryan came in and shut the door," Central coach Donn Foltz said. "[Davis] did a great job."

Kyian Hedrick went 2-4 with a double, and J.J. Armentrout added two hits and an RBI for the Falcons, who improved to 6-11, and 5-7 in the district.

"Very high quality organization and ahead of us in the standings," Foltz said of Sherando. "Any time you can beat somebody ahead of you, it's a good win."

WINCHESTER — Millbrook bounced back from a five-goal loss earlier in the season to tie Handley 2-2 on Monday.

Greg Jacobs started the scoring for Millbrook in the 44th minute, before Handley answered with two quick strikes. Benny Buono answered five minutes later, however, to tie it back up.

"It was a pretty frantic period," Millbrook coach Neil Hammond said.

Millbrook (5-5-2, 4-4-2 Northwestern) fared far better than in a 5-0 loss at Handley on March 18.

"They're the number one team and deservedly so," Hammond said. "But we played a lot better than we did the last time we played them."

Matt Brannon and Randolph Boppe scored for Handley, which is 11-0-2 and 9-0-2 in the Northwestern District.

Generals 2, Gladiators 0

QUICKSBURG — Colton Koontz assisted on goals by Armando Moreno-Paniagua and Patrick Bain as Stonewall shut out Riverheads, 2-0.

"Riverheads didn't create any quality chances, but they're a little bit shorthanded," said Stonewall coach Nate Hissong. "They had some players out."

The Generals, who won behind Hayden Miller's first start in goal of the season, essentially wrapped up second place in the district with the win.

"It was definitely a game we had to win to have any chance of hosting in the district tournament," Hissong said. "It wasn't the prettiest game — we kind of ground it out a little bit, but got the win."

Girls soccer

Wildcats 3, Falcons 0

FRONT ROYAL — Sarah Schmidt scored and had two assists as Warren County rolled over Central 3-0.

"The whole team had a good night, just passing the ball," Wildcats coach Mike Carpenter said.

In the second minute, Schmidt sent a through ball to Megan Willams, who scored the first goal. In the 25th, Carson Scates hit the post with a shot, which Schmidt headed in on the rebound. Finally, in the 73rd minute, Schmidt found Scates with a crossing pass for the game's last goal.

Warren County (6-6-2, 4-6-1 Northwestern)
