Saturday, May 10, 2008 Copley leads Colonels past HawksDaily Staff Reports Colonels 4, Hawks 1 FRONT ROYAL Complementing a four-hit, three-strikeout performance by James Wood's Matt Copley on Friday, the Colonels used a two-run fourth inning and manufactured 10 hits to defeat Skyline in Northwestern District baseball play, 4-1. Copley pitched 5 and 2/3 innings for the Colonels, giving up just one earned run on the night. Offensively for James Wood, Tim Spore was 3-for-3 with an RBI and Josh Dick added two hits and an RBI. "Good to get a win and try to get the momentum going into the tournament," James Wood head coach Jared Mounts said. Skyline was held to just five hits and manufactured its only run in the bottom of the sixth inning. Mountaineers 6, Rams 1 STRASBURG The last time the Strasburg and Madison County girls soccer teams were paired on the pitch, the Rams suffered an eight goal scolding on April 22. On Friday, Strasburg continued to find steady progression in the program's first season, despite another Bull Run District loss in its 6-1 defeat to Madison County. The Rams trailed by just two goals at halftime and were led by Dara Dillman's 14 saves in goal, including one on a Madison County penalty kick. Casey Swanger scored the team's lone goal with less than five minutes remaining, which was assisted by Tori Avvenire. "We were playing well, passing well," said Strasburg head coach Jonathan Dodd, whose team fell to 2-12, 2-6 on the season. "The girls have just improved tremendously since the beginning of the season. Aggressive game on both sides, the ball just fell their way." Colonels 5, Hawks 3 FRONT ROYAL Winning its second consecutive game after a five-game losing streak, the James Wood boys soccer team managed a hat trick from Alex Barrette and a pair of goals from Zach Lloyd in the team's 5-3 victory over Skyline on Friday. James Wood trailed 3-1 just 14 minutes into the game, after Skyline converted on a pair of goals that sailed just inside the crossbar, and the last coming on a penalty kick. However, Barrette closed the first half with a goal to make the score 3-2. "They played well in the fist half," James Wood head coach Sean Welge said. "The scoreboard just didn't reflect it." Barrette added his second goal just 27 seconds into the second half to tie the game, 3-3, before Lloyd's go-ahead strike with 9:42 remaining gave James Wood the advantage. Barrette scored his final goal 42 seconds later. "They're playing great right now, I think that we had a little losing streak there and they were getting better during the losing streak," Welge said of his team, which improved to 8-7, 6-7. "Now things are coming together at the right time." |
