Tuesday, October 7, 2008 Thompson finishes second in Region II tourney CROZET The Sherando Warriors played 16 practice holes on Sunday at Old Trail Golf Club, preceded by a round of 18 last week as groundwork for Monday's Group AA, Region II tournament. Their extracurricular effort was to gain comfort and familiarity with the course, invoking extra shots drops, mulligans, multiple drives and putts to prepare for the rigors of postseason golf and compare with the region's sound competition.
AP SportsClarke golfer qualifies for states FARMVILLE The golf season and in some cases, golf careers ended ingloriously for most of the area's competitors Monday, on a harrowing, far-away course in a mismanaged Region B tournament. But for Clarke County's Darrin Pyatt, the season will continue. Monday, October 6, 2008
By Jeremy Stafford Daily Sports Correspondent WINCHESTER In a rivalry game with the Christopher Newport University, the Shenandoah Hornets meant to execute a very simple game plan: Run the ball with Kevin Roberts, control the clock, and frustrate the Christopher Newport rushing attack. But penalties and turnovers stymied the Shenandoah offense and provided Christopher Newport with spectacular field position. Able to run the ball on a short field, Christopher Newport controlled the football for 39:27 and eventually defeated the Hornets 17-7 on Sprint Field at Shentel Stadium. Monday, October 6, 2008 Warriors hammer Falcons By Dennis Atwood Daily Sports Correspondent STEPHENS CITY The fans attending the Sherando Warriors' homecoming game against the Central Falcons on Saturday afternoon were treated to a rare football doubleheader. At least it seemed that way, given the distinctly different halves. Sherando broke open a close game at the half and pulled away with a 47-7 win over Central. After the elaborate pre-game festivities, with Native American drumming and chanting on the PA system, and a costumed warrior riding in on horseback to chuck a spear into the ground at the 30-yard line, the Warriors team exhibited the expected enhanced motivation following the ending of their 28-game regular-season winning streak last week by Handley. Saturday, October 4, 2008
FRONT ROYAL Relative to where they were last year, the Hawks were sitting pretty. Trailing just 16-12 in the fourth quarter, with Division 3 power Handley facing a fourth-and-short to keep the ball for the last 49 seconds, Skyline needed to make one more stop and manufacture a tough but not impossible scoring drive. Saturday, October 4, 2008 Running attack sparks Colonels to win By Jeremy Stafford Daily Sports Correspondent FRONT ROYAL For a while, the James Wood Colonels seemed as though they might collapse under the weight of their own mistakes. After the Colonels turned the ball over to the Warren County Wildcats on a fumbled snap in the first quarter, James Wood defensive back Harrison Davis batted a potential touchdown pass from Austin Schwarz out of the air and into the hands of Wildcats wideout Michael Grove, giving Warren County its first score of the night. Saturday, October 4, 2008 Hornets try to put close losses behind them WINCHESTER In football, five is seemingly a peculiar number a field goal here, a two-point conversion or safety there. For the Shenandoah Hornets, however, five points is the difference between their current 1-3 record and a possible 3-1 outburst. Saturday, October 4, 2008 Eagles trounce Panthers By Alyssa Goodson Daily Sports Correspondent BERRYVILLE With the ball in the hands of Sam Shiley on Friday night, Clarke County was on top of the world. Shiley played the dual role of quarterback and running back, passing for 137 yards and rushing for 180 yards in Clarke's 24-6 victory over Page County. Saturday, October 4, 2008 Luray spoils Strasburg's homecoming By Robert Edmonds Daily Sports Correspondent STRASBURG It was supposed to be Strasburg's night. The school was decorated in purple. Fans' faces were painted with team colors. It seemed as if the entire town had shown up to support the Rams on this homecoming night. Before the game began, you could see the focus in the players' eyes and the intensity as they trembled with excitement. Someone should have informed Luray of the events that were about to take place Friday night. Well, they knew it was homecoming for the Rams, but it didn't seem to matter. The Bulldogs took to the field calm and collected, and like a bolt of lightning shocked the Rams before they knew what hit them. Saturday, October 4, 2008 Mountaineers top smaller Generals By Dennis Atwood Daily Sports Correspondent QUICKSBURG The lead-in chatter to Friday night's game had it that Madison County, with the advantages of size, speed, skilled players, and a 4-0 record, would have an easy time in their game against the smaller Stonewall Jackson Generals. After all, the Generals had lost their star running back, Colton Koontz, for the remainder of the season due to a broken ankle in last week's game. But the Generals (3-2) ignored that script, demonstrated that skill comes in various sizes, and that determination and drive count for a lot as they jumped ahead 13-0 by the time the second quarter began. Saturday, October 4, 2008 Warriors still on track to reach goals By Hunter Taylor Sherando football player This week started just as any other. Like I say every week we are still one family with one heartbeat. And that heart is beating faster than ever for our game this week against the Central Falcons. This week is Homecoming week in Stephens City, with the bonfire and parade, but nothing can knock us off our path to our final goals. Friday, October 3, 2008 Lunsford providing consistency for Hornets WINCHESTER While some of his blocking mates conceal Mohawks beneath their blue Shenandoah helmets, quarterback Vern Lunsford sported a style more suited to his personality. Lunsford said lineman Sean McKenzie crafted his new-found hairdo prior to last Saturday's loss to Ferrum, and still strutted the zig-zags buzzed onto the back of his scalp during interviews on Wednesday. Friday, October 3, 2008 Skyline's Thorne gaining respect FRONT ROYAL Most teams this year have rolled safety help toward Andrew Thorne, or double-teamed him, or disguised their coverage against him. In his first four games, however, he accumulated 11 catches for 234 yards, including six touchdowns. The Millbrook Pioneers took a different approach to Skyline's 6-foot-3, 180-pound receiver. By Dennis Atwood Daily Sports Correspondent WINCHESTER After their short-handed loss to Sherando ended their previous run of 29 consecutive regular season wins, the Millbrook Pioneers extended their current volleyball winning streak to three games Thursday night by sweeping the visiting James Wood Colonels 25-20, 25-18, and 25-19. With Devon Courneya and Anna Comer rejoining the nearly all-juniors lineup in the previous game at Brenstville, and the addition of freshmen setter Megan Perry and Blake Parkes, the Pioneers' appear to have regained their stride in leading the Northwestern District. Friday, October 3, 2008 Hawks, Judges key Northwestern game FRONT ROYAL Thanks to Handley's surprising win over Sherando last week and an unexpected 5-0 start to the season by Skyline, the Judges-Hawks tilt tonight in Front Royal (for Skyline's homecoming) has blossomed into one of the more compelling games of the season. Handley coach Tony Rayburn said his team hasn't shown any signs of lingering on the Sherando win and failing to focus on Skyline. Friday, October 3, 2008 Sherando cruises to sweep of Handley By Robert Edmonds Daily Sports Correspondent WINCHESTER Handley entered Thursday night's matchup with Sherando hoping to come away with a win or at least avoid a second shutout to the Warriors this season. The Judges began the night keeping pace with the Warriors through much of the first game, but it didn't take long for Sherando to pull together and blow past Handley, rolling to a quick 3-0 (25-17, 25-9, 25-14) victory. Friday, October 3, 2008 A look at investing in the forecasters If you're an investor in these terrifyingly desperate economic times, the burden of making a decision on what to do with your money is likely gnawing at your conscience night and day. You could hold on to your investments, and hope they rebound enough to recoup what you initially put in. You could sell, and get out while the getting is good. You could buy low, and try to eventually capitalize on the sorry state of affairs. Or, you could do what I do, and throw away your 401(k) statement without opening it. Thursday, October 2, 2008
By Jeremy Stafford Daily Sports Correspondent WINCHESTER Cross country runners call it Greenhouse Hill. It's located just below the James Wood High School greenhouse that extends beyond the woods and consists of nothing but dirt, rocks, and tree roots. It's easily the most harrowing plot of terrain on the James Wood cross country course, and with the rain, it was made even more punishing. Wednesday, October 1, 2008
FRONT ROYAL For the second straight season, Sherando's Casey Thompson was in line for the Northwestern District tournament title except on Tuesday, he had company. On their 18th hole, the par-3 8th at Shenandoah Valley Golf Club, Thompson was tied with Skyline junior Ryan Rettberg, his title defense hinging on the 154-yard hole. Wednesday, October 1, 2008 Rams make quick work of George Mason By Dennis Atwood Daily Sports Correspondent STRASBURG The Strasburg Rams were even more efficient than in Saturday night's volleyball sweep of Luray, using less than 50 minutes to sweep the George Mason Mustangs Tuesday night, 25-11, 25-5, 25-18. The highlight of the match was the Rams' amazing 18-point run to close out Game 2. Leading 7-5, Strasburg scored on three Mustang attack errors and a player violation; seven aces and a kill by junior setter Jaclyn Ayers; a kill each by sophomore Casey Spiker and seniors Shanna Devers and Bethany Doman; and three kills, including the gamewinner, by junior Jenna Smoot. Tuesday, September 30, 2008 Eagles win district; Ram beats sudden death MIDDLETOWN Unavoidable drama shadowed Jonathan Ritenour past the 18th green on Monday, through the outdoor pavilion after he finished his round, and back to the first tee box, where he advanced to a playoff at the Bull Run District tournament. It was the first playoff hole of his career, being paired with Luke Crothamel and Hunter Peddy of Madison County and teammate Jamie Rutherford, who each finished in regulation with a 23-over-par 95 and embarked on a sudden-death round. Monday, September 29, 2008
WINCHESTER -- As the final seconds ticked off the clock, Handley coach Tony Rayburn showed a rare sign of emotion with a fist pump. The student section stormed the field to celebrate with the team as soon as the clock hit zeros. All Sherando could do was stand and watch in shock. The Warriors' 28-game regular-season winning streak had come to an end with a 21-19 loss to the Judges on Saturday at the Handley Bowl. Monday, September 29, 2008 Strasburg powers past Luray in three By Dennis Atwood Daily Sports Correspondent STRASBURG The Luray Bulldogs visited the Strasburg Rams on Saturday night for a non-district volleyball match of two-loss teams. The Rams took less than a hour to sandwich lopsided wins in Games 1 and 3 around an intensely close Game 2, to sweep the match (25-11, 25-23, and 25-9) and improve their season record to 9-2. "I told the squad that in Game 2 we missed too many serves and that was difference," Strasburg coach Suzanne Mathias said. "We kept attacking and stayed aggressive." Saturday, September 27, 2008
STRASBURG In a downpour of rain, incomplete passes, fumbles and penalty flags, Colton Koontz was the only thing that refused to hit the ground. The junior rushed eight times for 186 yards and two touchdowns as Stonewall beat Strasburg 21-12. Koontz played just over a quarter, finally hitting the turf for good with a right leg injury returning an interception early in the second quarter. Saturday, September 27, 2008 Still perfect: Hawks humble Pioneers By Jeremy Stafford -- Daily Sports Correspondent WINCHESTER For the Millbrook Pioneers, if the heavy rain wasn't a force to be reckoned with, then Skyline wideout Andrew Thorne certainly was. Thorne, who had no trouble finding soft spots in the Millbrook secondary, caught nine passes for 229 yards and two touchdowns, leading the undefeated Hawks to a 28-21 victory over the Pioneers. Saturday, September 27, 2008 Colonels use special teams to control Falcons WOODSTOCK There's nothing fancy about James Wood's punt return team. Actually, there is seldom a return. Saturday, September 27, 2008 SU wants to get back to physical football WINCHESTER It wasn't a sweltering August day just an early season reminder of what the drudgery of those preseason practices felt like and the skills they enforced. On Tuesday, three days after a game that witnessed too many missed tackles and assignments in Shenandoah's 17-7 loss to Albright, the team practiced a drill not accustomed to being on the game-week itinerary. Saturday, September 27, 2008 Diary of an athlete: Warriors pumped for first real test By Hunter Taylor -- Sherando football player This week was just like the last three. Everyone was extra pumped because this will be our first "real test." Handley is a very athletic team, so we all had to step it up another notch this week was the week we needed to reach "212," which is the temperature at which water boils. It's one of coach Hall's favorite sayings 212 is that one notch that takes a good team and makes them great. Friday, September 26, 2008 Hornets' passing game steadily improves WINCHESTER Shenandoah quarterback Vern Lunsford is making week-to-week improvement, according to head coach Paul Barnes and offensive coordinator Brian Wolf, after his school-record 18 completions in last week's 17-7 loss to Albright. But for opponents to begin game planning for the threat of pass-dominated drives, Barnes still believes it may take a a full season to at least curb the stigma of an offense reserved to rushing the football Shenandoah's yearly offensive hook. Friday, September 26, 2008 Chuck McGill: Tough breaks results in worst week ever Eight wins, 12 losses. It's a humbling performance and the worst overall record by a prognosticator in the "We're the experts?" picks in my time as the Daily's sports editor. I'd love to break out a laundry list of excuses my upcoming wedding on Oct. 4, being flustered by my alma mater's (West Virginia) 1-2 start, or Tommy Keeler changing my picks but I cannot. I was two measly games behind Tim Tassa for the overall lead, and I threw a Hail Mary pass when our contest is still in the first quarter. Friday, September 26, 2008 Reynolds steps up as new Strasburg QB STRASBURG For the second year in a row, Strasburg is going with an unassuming, unimposing sophomore at the quarterback position. A year ago, the precocious Bub McKelvey inherited the job from Kirby Keller before the season started. This season, McKelvey has a louder voice in the locker room, a year's worth of experience and a bit more size under center. He also has a torn labrum in his throwing shoulder. Friday, September 26, 2008 Wildcats falter in OT FRONT ROYAL Brentsville's Chris Spinks knew he had to make a play. After getting beat on two pass plays earlier in the game, the senior wanted to make up for it. He picked the perfect time. Friday, September 26, 2008
WINCHESTER While many of their classmates were sleeping in during the summer, or sitting on their couches channel surfing, members of Handley's offensive line spent most of their mornings at school lifting weights. It wasn't an ideal way to spend the summer, but so far this season the Judges are enjoying the benefits from all the hard work. Thursday, September 25, 2008 Using kicker a 'change' for Generals QUICKSBURG A strange thing happened in Quicksburg on Aug. 30. Running back Colton Koontz scored on a running play from 29 yards out to tie Central, 6-6, in the first quarter. That wasn't the strange part. Thursday, September 25, 2008 Wildcats regroup, survive Falcons in five By Jeremy Stafford -- Daily Sports Correspondent FRONT ROYAL Trailing by one point late in the fourth game, Warren County coach Cathy Brill called a timeout to give her girls a rest. While Central took the timeout as an opportunity to game-plan, the Warren County girls decided to break the tension of the match by playing a game of their own. BERRYVILLE The Rams like to keep their timeouts few and far between an effort to emphasize the team's need to attack and raise its intensity level. "We usually just giggle and have fun in timeouts," senior Bethany Doman said after Strasburg's 3-0 (25-15, 25-10, 25-21) victory over Clarke County on Tuesday. "No pressure." Wednesday, September 24, 2008 Dirnagl, Baker anchor Bridgewater's volleyball team Tim Maypray (Randolph-Macon Academy '06) has been doing a little bit of everything for Virginia Military Institute this season. The junior moved from running back/return specialist to quarterback for the football team. Maypray has started at quarterback all three games, sharing time with two others, and leads the team in passing and rushing. He has 323 yards rushing on 40 carries and four touchdowns. |
