Prep roundup: Thompson throws second no-hitter of season

Daily Staff Report – sports@nvdaily.com

Darrell Thompson threw his second no-hitter of the season to help lead visiting Sherando to a 5-0 Northwestern District victory over Skyline on Saturday.

Thompson walked Skyline’s Barry Smallwood to start off the first inning, but was perfect the rest of the way. Thompson struck out 15. He had a no-hitter earlier this season against Handley, in a six-inning game. It’s the first time anyone at Sherando has had two no-hitters in a season at Sherando, and only the fourth no-hitter in school history.

Thompson also has the school record for wins in a regular season, and for strikeouts in the regular season.

“We knew early on he was going to be tough to hit,” Sherando coach Pepper Martin said. “He had every pitch working. He was getting good velocity on his fastball and good placement. His slider was nasty, and his change-up was working. He was dominating.”

Tre Porter had a hit and two RBIs for the Warriors (17-2, 11-1 Northwestern). Taylor Loudan went 2-for-4 with a double, and Jacob Carney was 1-for-4 with an RBI. Carney’s single, his 35th of the season, set a school record for most hits in the regular season.
