Prep roundup: R-MA pounds rival MMA in baseball finale
WOODSTOCK — Visiting Randolph-Macon Academy’s baseball team averaged four hits an inning as the Yellow Jackets pounded Massanutten Military Academy 25-9 on Thursday.
R-MA (4-8-1) finished with 20 hits in the five-inning game.
Yellow Jackets senior pitcher Doug Brennand, who started and earned the win with two innings of work (he allowed one earned run while striking out five) had a huge day at the plate. Brennand was 2-for-3 with seven RBIs, including a third-inning grand slam that sparked R-MA’s 15-run outburst.
R-MA’s John Camarella was 3-for-3 with a triple and four runs scored, Tyler Vaughan was 3-for-5 and scored two runs, Dennis Ponn was 3-for-6 with two RBIs, Sean McKnight went 2-for-4 with a double and three RBIs, Joey Monastero was 3-for-5 and scored five runs and Jeremiah Hixson was 2-for-2 with a run scored.
For MMA, Alexander Kellogg went 2-for-2 with a double and a run scored, Joshua Holt was 2-for-3 with a triple and two runs scored, and Jeffrey Brown was 2-for-4 with two doubles.
Madison County 11, Central 7
MADISON — Visiting Central rallied for five runs in the top of the seventh, but it wasn’t nearly enough to catch the Mountaineers on Thursday.
Corey Sibert had a big day at the plate for the Falcons, stroking a triple and a double and driving in four runs. Also for Central, Cody Sager was 2-for-4 and stole a base.
Central 1, Madison County 0
MADISON — Visiting Central managed just one hit and one run, but that offense was enough to back starting pitcher Bekah Ansbro on Thursday.
Ansbro, a junior, fired a complete game shutout for the victory, striking out seven batters while allowing four hits and no walks.
Shennan Waldron had the lone hit for Central, which plated the winning run in the top of the fifth inning.
