District contests, rivalry games highlight busy week
There is another heavy dose of football games scheduled for this weekend.
One of the marquee matchups has Strasburg traveling to George Mason on Friday. The Rams are looking to build on their 3-1 start and are coming off a bye week, while the Mustangs (2-2) are coming off a 23-15 defeat to William Monroe. The game starts at 7:30 p.m.
Strasburg coach Mark Roller said even though they lost standout running back Demonte Noble to graduation he expects the Mustangs to be a very solid team.
“(Running back Dustin) Green is back. He’s a real good athlete,” Roller said. “They don’t have Noble or anybody like him, so that’s good. But their offensive line is always the same — small, quick, feisty. Then you throw in the athlete of Green and they can do some things.”
Stuarts Draft (4-0) at Stonewall Jackson (0-4): Things won’t get easier for the Generals after their 39-0 loss to Page County this past week. Stuarts Draft defeated East Rockingham, 35-14. The Cougars have scored at least 35 points in three of their four contests.
Skyline (1-3) at John Champe (3-1): The Hawks had a bye last week and will be looking to bounce back from a disappointing loss to Manassas Park. John Champe beat Park View, 46-20 last week.
James Wood (1-4) at Sherando (2-3): You can usually throw the records out the window when these two play. The Warriors are coming off an impressive 47-12 victory over Jefferson County, West Virginia. The Colonels have been slumping and fell to Hedgesville, West Virginia, 39-14, last week.
Sherando sophomore quarterback Hunter Entsminger said both teams are always excited to play each other.
“It’s cross-county. We play them every year,” Entsminger said. “It’s time to see what we’re made of.”
Central (3-1) at Warren County (1-3): The two teams were on opposite ends of overtime games last week. The Falcons are coming a big Bull Run District win over Clarke County, 22-21, in overtime. The Wildcats lost, 26-20, to Madison County.
Randolph-Macon Academy (2-1) at Fishburne Military (2-1): The Yellow Jackets will be trying to make it three wins in a row. R-MA quarterback Corban Ruch is one the area’s top passers this season. Fishburne Military knocked off Massanutten Military Academy, 79-0, last week.
Hargrave Military Academy (1-3) at Massanutten Military Academy (0-5) (2 p.m., Saturday): It will be homecoming at MMA as the Colonels look to pick up their first win of the season. Hargrave Military lost, 28-14, to R-MA last week.
Sherando won the Conference 21 West tournament last week, and this week other local schools will try to do the same.
Strasburg and Central will play in the Conference 35 tournament at 10 a.m. today at Bowling Green in Front Royal.
Also at 10 a.m. today, Skyline and Warren County will participate in the Conference 28 tournament at Greene Hills Country Club in Stanardsville.
Stonewall Jackson will also play at 10 a.m. today at Altavista’s home course, London Downs, in the Conference 44 tournament.
The top two teams and top six individuals not on the top two teams all advance to next week’s regional tournaments.
Rivalry games highlight this week’s volleyball action.
Warren County plays at Skyline at 7 p.m. today. The Wildcats won the first meeting in three sets. Both teams are in Conference 28, so it will have an effect on seedings for the postseason, on top of being a cross-town rivalry.
“That’s always a hype game. It’s always a big match,” Skyline coach Erika Berry said. “Warren County’s a good team and they move well. So it’s definitely going to be a challenge, but a lot of spirits and emotions come out when we play them. So it should be exciting.”
Strasburg hosts Warren County at 7 p.m. Tuesday, and then host Shenandoah County rival Central at 7 p.m. Thursday.
Warren County hosts Central and George Mason at 5 p.m. Wednesday to highlight the week of cross country. Strasburg hosts Clarke County and Rappahannock County at 5 p.m. Wednesday, while Stonewall Jackson travels to Luray for a tri-meet on the same day and time.
Skyline will participate in the Great Meadows Invitational at 9 a.m. Saturday at The Plains.
